I REVERSERVED THE CABLES on a jumpstart and now the check engine light is on and the engine will only rev to 1200rpm.

Run fault codes to reset the CPU but be prepared for a CPU replacement as reversing the leads when jump starting can cause a failure in the CPU.

I am having trouble locating the starter in a 1983 Toyota Celica GT. Any help is appreciated!

mpa16674.jpg
  • the starter is underneith the car read below.

  • Locate the negative battery cable on the negative battery terminal. Remove the retaining bolt with a wrench, then remove the cable from the battery. Isolate the cable from the battery so it cannot fall back against the battery.

  • 2

Raise the front of your toyata with a jack and position a set of jack stands under the front suspension. Lower the Toyota onto the stands, then remove the jack. Slide under the passenger's side of the Toyota and locate the starter motor near the rear of the engine.

  • 3

Locate the wiring harness plug on the starter solenoid and pull it straight out. Find the larger connection next to it and remove the retaining nut from the stud with a wrench. Pull the cable loose and push it aside.

  • 4

Remove the two mounting bolts from the front of the starter motor with a socket and ratchet. Lower the starter from the engine compartment. Raise a new starter into the engine compartment and install the two mounting bolts from the transmission side of the bell housing. Tighten both bolts to 29 pound-feet with a torque wrench and socket.

  • 5

Plug in the wiring harness connection to the connector on the starter motor. Push the two connector halves together until they lock. Install the larger cable on the "B" terminal followed by the retaining nut and tighten it with a wrench.

  • 6

Raise the front of the Toyota off the jack stands with a jack. Remove the stands from under the Toyota and carefully lower the Toyota to the ground. Remove the jack.

  • 7

Connect the negative battery cable to the negative post on the battery, then tighten the retaining bolt with a wrench. Close the hood and test the repair by starting the engine.

My 1999 Grand Cherokee just quits running. then it starts back up like nothing was wrong. Engine light has come on so any ideas?

mine did that-bought a 4,7v8 that had been stood idle for a while,it would cut out when slowing down for roundabouts and junctions etc and engine light would come on but start back up fine, the problem fixed itself the more i used the truck-it was a good chance it was to do with the sensors int the air flow meter pipes sticking due to lack of use-they look like small plug leads on mine situated ontop of a black box near the windscreen passenger side

When I start it up first thing in the morning it blows smoke untill engine is warm. Will I need to get new guide seal? 100 series 4.5ltr petrol

if it is blue smoke it is oil, what is happening is when the engine stands overnight the oil runs down through the valve seals & into the cylinders hence the smoke when you first start the engine you will most likely need to recondition the head ( new valve guides & seals plus a valve grind) it may be cheaper to fit a reconditioned head.....hope this helps.....cheers

    Spark plug firing order

The firing order for this vehicle is 1-6-5-4-3-2. When you are standing at the front of the car looking under the hood, the plug in the left corner of the engine is firing in cylinder 1, as you move to the right you see cylinder 3 and 5. On the other side engine (the side facing the firewall) going left to right is 2 4 and 6. Remember, this is what you see standing in front of the car, not the engine. If you want to stand in front of the engine you will have to be standing at the passenger side fender!

Once you know this, it is easy to see the cross pattern in which the engine fires. Hope this helps you, cheers!

    Engine check light on

My '06 Corolla's CHECK ENGINE light came on the other day and then went out after about a half hour. It was back on this morning and stayed on, and I noticed that the automatic transmission was shifting a bit more roughly than it ever had before. Took the car to a Toyota dealership immediately. The guy told me that Toyota has had an ongoing problem with the CHECK ENGINE light coming on due to a faulty CPU (car's computer "brain"). This has been affecting models from '05, '06, and '07 according to him. He said Toyota had extended the warranty for this particular part (i.e. the CPU) due to it being faulty. The warranty expires once you reach 80,000 miles, and my car has 87,000 miles on it (yes, I do drive that much for my job!). But the guy at the dealership was kind enough to put in a new CPU for free because I have been a good, loyal customer there. The CHECK ENGINE light is now off and it should stay that way.
