the brake bar is the metal piece that goes between the brake shoes. 3. remove the brake shoe springs with the spring pliers. *THE BRAKES HOW HIGH POWERED SPRINGS AND SHOULD BE HANDLED CAREFULLY* 4. remove the brake shoes with the spring tool. 5. clean parts thoroughly with brake part cleaner. (i like spraying it into a glass jar and shaking it a little) you can use a wire wheel to brush to clean the harder material. then take some brake cleaner and spray down the backing plate and remove any and all grease and old brake material. 6. using brake grease, dab a small amount on the adjuster and the small oval shaped pads on the backing plate, *use a SMALL AMOUNT* less then a finger nail in size. 7. reassembly, now compare the shoes and take note that there are 2 long and 2 short shoes. thte larger shoes go in the front and the smaller go to the rear of the vehicle. set the pairs aside so you do not confuse them. next a fix the shoes to the backing plate and then set the adjuster to the lowest setting, (shortest). and set the brake bar in place then set the springs (the longer springs) 8. adjusting the shoes. slip the drum on the hub and spin the brake, it should feel like it has a bit of drag. keep slipping the drum on and off making adjustments to the adjuster till the drum either is adjusted correctly or you cannot remove it, if you need to adjust the brake further there is an access in the backing plate for further adjustment.
First you have to compress the parking brake cable spring and attach the parking brake lever.
Clean and lubricate the brake backing plate.
Use silicon Brake Caliper Grease and Dielectric Compound.
Then,
install the rear brake shoes and linings:
1) position the rear brake shoes and linings
2) position the parking brake lever
3) install the brake shoe hold-down spring pins and the brake shoe hold-down springs.
Install the parking brake strut

Test the operation of the automatic self-adjuster
1. Pull the brake shoe adjusting lever cable and check that the brake shoe adjusting lever rotates the brake shoe adjuster assembly
2. Release the brake shoe adjusting lever cable and check that the brake shoe adjusting lever advances to the next notch on the brake shoe adjusting screw nut.
Raise and support the vehicle and remove the wheel and brake drum from the wheel to be worked on.
If you have never replaced the brakes on a van before and you are
not too familiar with the procedures involved, only dissemble and
assemble one side at a time, leaving the other side intact as a
reference during reassembly.
Install a clamp over the ends of the wheel cylinder to prevent
the pistons of the wheel cylinder from coming out, causing loss of
fluid and much grief.
Contract the brake shoes by pulling the self-adjusting lever away
from the starwheel adjustment screw and turn the starwheel up and back
until the pivot nut is drawn onto the starwheel as far as it will come.
Pull the adjusting lever, cable and automatic adjuster spring
down and toward the rear to unhook the pivot hook from the large hole
in the secondary shoe web. Do not attempt to pry the pivot hook from
the hole.
Remove the automatic adjuster spring and the adjusting lever.
Remove the secondary shoe-to-anchor spring with a brake tool.
(Brake tools are very common implements and are available at auto parts
stores). Remove the primary shoe-to-anchor spring and unhook the cable
anchor. Remove the anchor pin plate.
Remove the cable guide from the secondary shoe.
Remove the shoe hold-down springs, shoes, adjusting screw, pivot
nut, and socket. Note the color of each hold-down spring for assembly.
To remove the hold-down springs, reach behind the brake backing plate
and place one finger on the end of one of the brake hold-down spring
mounting pins. Using a pair of pliers, grasp the washer type retainer
on top of the hold-down spring that corresponds to the pin which you
are holding. Push down on the pliers and turn them 90° to align the
slot in the washer with the head on the spring mounting pin. Remove the
spring and washer retainer and repeat this operation on the hold down
spring on the other shoe.
Remove the parking brake link and spring. Disconnect the parking brake cable from the parking brake lever.
After removing the rear brake secondary shoe, disassemble the
parking brake lever from the shoe by removing the retaining clip and
spring washer.
To install:
Assemble the parking brake lever to the secondary shoe and secure it with the spring washer and retaining clip.
Apply a light coating of Lubriplate®, or equivalent, at the points where the brake shoes contact the backing plate.
Position the brake shoes on the backing plate, and install the
hold-down spring pins, springs, and spring washer type retainers. On
the rear brake, install the parking brake link, spring and washer.
Connect the parking brake cable to the parking brake lever.
Install the anchor pin plate, and place the cable anchor over the anchor pin with the crimped side toward the backing plate.
Install the primary shoe-to-anchor spring with the brake tool.
Install the cable guide on the secondary shoe web with the
flanged holes fitted into the hole in the secondary shoe web. Thread
the cable around the cable guide groove.
Install the secondary shoe-to-anchor (long) spring. Be sure that
the cable end is not cocked or binding on the anchor pin when
installed. All of the parts should be flat on the anchor pin. Remove
the wheel cylinder piston clamp.
Apply Lubriplate®, or equivalent, to the threads and the socket
end of the adjusting starwheel screw. Turn the adjusting screw into the
adjusting pivot nut to the limit of the threads and then back off 1
/

turn.
Interchanging the brake shoe adjusting screw assemblies from one
side of the vehicle to the other would cause the brake shoes to retract
rather than expand each time the automatic adjusting mechanism is
operated. To prevent this, the socket end of the adjusting screw is
stamped with an "R" or an "L" for "RIGHT" or "LEFT". The adjusting
pivot nuts can be distinguished by the number of lines machined around
the body of the nut; one line indicates left-hand nut and two lines
indicate a right-hand nut.
Place the adjusting socket on the screw and install this assembly
between the shoe ends with the adjusting screw nearest to the secondary
shoe.
Place the cable hook into the hole in the adjusting lever from
the backing plate side. The adjusting levers are stamped with an R
(right) or a
L
(left) to indicate their installation on the right or left-hand brake assembly.
Position the hooked end of the adjuster spring in the primary
shoe web and connect the loop end of the spring to the adjuster lever
hole.
Pull the adjuster lever, cable and automatic adjuster spring down
toward the rear to engage the pivot hook in the large hole in the
secondary shoe web.
After installation, check the action of the adjuster by pulling
the section of the cable guide and the adjusting lever toward the
secondary shoe web far enough to lift the lever past a tooth on the
adjusting screw starwheel. The lever should snap into position behind
the next tooth, and release of the cable should cause the adjuster
spring to return the lever to its original position. This return action
of the lever will turn the adjusting screw starwheel one tooth. The
lever should contact the adjusting screw starwheel one tooth above the
centerline of the adjusting screw.
If the automatic adjusting mechanism does not perform properly, check the following:
Check the cable and fittings. The cable ends should fill or
extend slightly beyond the crimped section of the fittings. If this is
not the case, replace the cable.
Check the cable guide for damage. The cable groove should be
parallel to the shoe web, and the body of the guide should lie flat
against the web. Replace the cable guide if this is not so.
Check the pivot hook on the lever. The hook surfaces should be
square with the body on the lever for proper pivoting. Repair or
replace the hook as necessary.
Make sure that the adjusting screw starwheel is properly seated in the notch in the shoe web.
Heavy Duty Systems
Raise and support the vehicle.
Remove the wheel and drum.
Remove the parking brake lever assembly retaining nut from behind the backing plate and remove the parking brake lever assembly.
Remove the adjusting cable assembly from the anchor pin, cable guide and adjusting lever.
Remove the brake shoe retracting springs.
Remove the brake shoe hold-down spring from each shoe.
Remove the brake shoes and adjusting screw assembly.
Disassemble the adjusting screw assembly.
Clean the ledge pads on the backing plate. Apply a light coat of
Lubriplate®, or equivalent, to the ledge pads (where the brake shoes
rub the backing plate).
I believe the bar should have a spring attached to it or relatively close by. when you let go of the brake, the spring pulls the shoes off of the drum and the bar keeps the brakes where they are and does not allow them to be pull back too far away from the drum
does it have rear disc brakes or drum brakes, if disc brakes should be changed just like the front and you might have an emergency brake shoe inside the rotor that they call a halo shoe, if it is drum brakes take off the adjusting spring and the return spring remove the brake adjuster,the the brake bar then remove the brake shoe hold down spring by holding the pin from the back and pushing and turning the spring to remove from the pin, you might have to remove the the emergency brake bar from one shoe by removing the horseshoe clip from the pin on the shoe if you have problems putting it back together look at the other side that you have not torn down yet.
there should be several springs. first there are (2) real short springs that hold the shoes to the dust cover/back plate. they go in the center of each shoe. then there is a short spring that goes at the bottom where the adjuster is located. there should be a hole in each shoe. finally there is a long spring that goes at the top where your brake cylinder is and this is what gets attched last after your emergancy brake levers are placed between the shoes .

The rear drum brakes:
Have internal shoes that expand against the brake drum (1126).
Are a single-anchor type.
Are actuated by one rear wheel cylinder (2262).
Have two pistons in the rear wheel cylinder (2261). One exerts force against the upper end of the primary shoe; the other exerts force against the upper end of the secondary shoe.
Adjust rear brake shoes and linings (2200) automatically.
Need manual brake adjustment if the adjusters are not operating properly or after the rear brake shoes and linings have been replaced.
When the brake pedal is applied, hydraulic fluid pressure forces the pistons in the rear wheel cylinder outward, moving the rear brake shoes and linings against the brake drum.
The rear drum brake system includes the parking brake mechanism. Refer to Section 206-05 .
Install the spring washer (3). The concave side of the spring washer should face the parking brake lever.
Install the pin (4).
Install the retaining ring (16).
Install the adjuster pin (12) in the shoe (15) so the pin projects 6.8 to 7.0 mm (0.268 to 0.276 inch) from the side of the shoe web where the adjuster actuator is installed.
Apply brake lubricant or equivalent to the threads of the adjuster screw (14) and inside diameter and face of the socket (7). Adequate lubrication is achieved when there is a continuous bead of lubricant at the open end of the adjuster nut (10) and the socket (7) when the threads are fully engaged.
Install the upper return spring (5).
Lay the shoes (1 and 15) on a clean, flat work surface in the position they will be in when installed on the backing plate.
Overlap the bottoms of the shoes so the upper shoe ends clear the wheel cylinder boots.
Make sure the upper shoe ends rest on the wheel cylinder piston ends.
Do not place the lower shoe web ends under the anchor plate until the lower return spring is installed.
NOTICE: Do not over-stretch the lower return spring. Damage can occur if it is stretched to more than 107.3 mm (4.22 inches) .
Install the lower return spring (6).
Bring the ends of the shoe and lining assemblies (1 and 15) together over the anchor plate.
Hook the spring ends to the shoe web holes.
Spread the lower ends of the shoe and the lining assemblies to clear the anchor plate.
Position the shoes against the backing plate and release them.
Pull the spring into the groove at the bottom of the anchor plate.
Connect the hold-down pins and the spring assemblies (8).
Install the adjuster actuator (11) over the end of the adjuster pin (12) so the top leg engages the notch in the adjuster screw. NOTICE: Do not over-stretch the actuator spring. Damage can occur if it is stretched to more than 83 mm (3.27 inches) .
Install the actuator spring (13). The free end of the adjuster actuator (11) must engage the notch of the adjuster nut.
