Runs great when it runs. Dies and cranks fast

Runs fine when running usually, but then it'll cough quiver and shake then die. Upon trying to restart it will sometimes crank fast. Other times the engine hits but doesn't start. Have replaced coil map sensor, new distributor and rotor and button. No idea so any help would be greatly appreciated

SOURCE: 94 olds hard starts when warm, starts when cold and runs rich

If you can get a fuel pressure gauge, check and see if the pressure is 16 to 24 lbs after the engine has warmed up.
I would connect the pressure gauge when the engine is cold, make sure it does not leak or touch anything hot, place the gauge between the hood and the windshield and drive the vehicle until it is at the temperature you feel it "starts hard". Shut the engine off and try to repeat the no start or hard start and make sure the pressure is correct.
Also, when you shut the engine off, watch the pressure and make sure it holds and does not drop to (0 LBS) of pressure.
One last question, has the fuel filter been changed in the past 30K.
Let me know.
Regards,

SOURCE: 99 olds silhouette... changed plugs wires and coil

will try to help, are you sure the fuel pump comes on and runs through the whole cycle of turning key on for 10 seconds through at least 5 cycles? the timing light may be picking up the crankshaft positioning sensor signal, it's magnetic pulse. and then again you could be dealing with a bad timing chain or belt, most likely chain driven. am trying to help, but not sure unless i hear it onsite. at least this may point you to something. sorry at no charge, hope this helps and thank you for choosing fixya.com if no help please repost!!!1

SOURCE: car starts and runs fine

Sounds like a bad ignition control module when it gets hot.

Hello! I need the trouble code...The vehicle is an On Board Diagnostic 1 (OBD!)...You can not use a scanner on an OBD1...See drawing below of connector under the steering wheel...Short pins A to B...Turn on the key...Don't start the engine...Light on dash will flash the code ie...4 long blinks...pause... 1 short blink=code 41...each code, if more tan one, will flash 3 times...record the code # and send it to me and I'll fix the problem....codes are all two digit... guru...saailer

My 1997 Toyota Avalon starts runs for 5to 6 minutes then dies and won't restart right away

vast 25 year old cars do the same thing, it's old and they do that.
those are called engine stalls.and have over 50 causes.
I have over 20 tests to find it, or less if lucky, using tools.

so dies and starter motor cranks fast but engine is dead.?
so if you crank a dead engine WOT wide open throttle does starts now?
as the near stall (misfiring bet) does a fast right foot save the stall.?
is the stall smooth like dragging a 2000 lb dead weight or violent.?
violent gross misfiring.
causes are many ,bad fuel, engine bad , spark bad and fuel bad.
or EGR stuck open, Idle fails, engine shakes, RPM 1/2 normal.
fuel pressure low or falls off.
engine fuel flooding , injectors leak.
spark plugs 25years old are a hopeless case,
bad spark wires bad (set)
if distributor,? it bad or cap and rotor bad.
alternator is dead battery dies. (cranks slow or weak or worse)
if starter sounds strong ALT is good.
IAC/ ISC valve stuck closed, clean it.
air cleaner packed up.
fuel filter packed or 90%)
FPR bad.
fuel pump bad.
and ton of engine problems is compression over 150PSI WOT?

Sputtered out and now it won't stay running; dies when put in gear.

Mass air flow , crank sensor . I wouldn't discount anything . Having a scan tool that can view engine sensor data would be a great help too , testing fuel pressure and flow and back pressure test the exhaust .

94 4.0 dies while driving will start after sitting a while

Sorry to say someone will have to have tools ready to check it the next time it quits running.
Could be a relay, the ignition module, the coil, or anything else that can get hot and stop working.

Was fine now doen't want to run

check the electronic coil, it is the same as a distributor cap on other cars, their is one coil for every 2 cylinders and they sell for around $24.00 and up

Ford Contour apparently starves for gas, dies.

tell your mechanic to replace the fuel filter. This part is usually less than $10. It should be replaced aout every 50K miles.

My 6 cyl F150 runs great untill it doesn't run at all. Driving at 70 (or any speed) it's like the key just turns off. No coughing, sputtering, or anything. It just dies. If I'm going fast enough it'll...

Without the benefit of doing any testing myself, I'd think the problem may be the ignition switch. Could also be the shutdown relay or a bad connection at the main computer. Crank position sensor could be suspect as well. I don't think its a fuel problem because that usually involves some spitting or bucking and if pump was bad it would not cool down and recover that quickly.
I know I mentioned a bunch of items here, but those are the items I'd check first.

Van runs fine for 3 to 5 miles after startup then dies

Code 42 is the (asd) automatic shutdown driver, there is an open or a short in the relay circuit, and I don't have my manual to tell you where to look, have it checked.
Code 11 is no distributor signal during engine cranking.
Code 12 is battery power to computor disconnected in last 50 to a 100 cycles; memory standby power lost.
Code 55 is end of code output. These are what my code manual is showing. That shutdown driver should be checked. Hope this helps.
