Trans computer chip reporting problem but I have a bad battery

Can a bad battery cause problems with the transmission computer chip? ie: Could it report the chip is bad but just needs a battery? I am in the computer business and I know here the lack of power causes my computers to malfunction and makes it hard to diagnose. Thanks for your help

The transmission controller is incorporated in the engine controller (same module). Power is supplied by the vehicle battery. There is no internal battery for the module, so when it is unplugged it resets to default settings losing any adaptive memory configurations. The system needs 12 volts to operate correctly. So if the vehicle battery has a bad cell, is weak, or can't maintain sufficent voltage during normal operations the vehicle can have some strange drivability effects. Less than 10 volts can make any module on the vehicle act "dumb". I hope this helps with your diagnosis.

Automotive computers need proper voltage at the battery in order to be properly tested or function properly. If your battery has 12v it is good enough to go ahead and test components. The system will "forgive" a slight deficit in power, but should not be tested without proper battery charge.

What are possible causes of P1768 code on a 2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser?

Do the easiest things first:
Check the battery earth lead (bear in mind that if you disconnect the batter you will probably have to re-enter the radio code). Check where it connects to the body/engine block - make sure it is clean and secure.

Then check every other earth lead you can find

Check engine light (angled wrench) is on. manual says something about transmission?

The "check engine" light indicates that there is a code stored in the computer. Until you get the code, you can't tell which part(s) may be bad. It may be transmission, or it may be something entirely different.

Most auto parts stores will read your codes for free. Do that and report back here. . .

The odds your sensor is bad is about 30%

The odds you have internal trans wear & damage
is about 70%

Sensors only report mechanical things that are not right
when the vehicles computer scans them, that said, sensors
do fail, BUT you use the codes to diagnose the system
& component test

Codes DO NOT indicate a failed part or need to replace any

All parts have to be tested & fail, or why would you waste money
throwing parts at a problem

We did that in that 1960's & got away with it,not with today's
technology

Transmission is not shifting but trans is good, computer is good too

Wow! That sounds like a really expensive way to diagnose the problem! YES, a bad ignition switch can can cause your transmission to not shift correctly. If the problem had been properly diagnosed, you would have known this LONG before replacing the computer and the transmission if this was the cause. You say you "checked [your] wires" and that "all [are] good", but apparently, this is not the case. If the wires had been PROPERLY checked, you would know if you have the correct voltage at the transmission solenoids from the ignition switch and it would be unnecessary for you to ask this question.

X5 "Trans.FailsafeProg" message. Keeps coming on

1) How old is your battery? The computer that controls the transmission is really sensitive to voltage. Many folks have reported that their first indication of a failing battery was transmission problems.
2) Next most common problem I have heard of in these transmissions is the temperature sensor in the transmission. The way to check it is to have a shop read out the temperature reported by the computer. If the car is warmed up and the computer still thinks that the transmission is cold, that is the problem.

Bmw x5 trans fail safity prog it will start but does not sound right also the battery light is on

9 out of 10 times a defective battery/ charging system causes problems with transmission. Why? because a computer controls your transmission. Have battery and charging system checked out.

Ck engine light on - no code

Check engine light with no codes usually means a PCM reset is happening. EBP shorting, ICP shorting, aftermarket "performance chip". PIDS need to be monitored to eliminate sensors. IDMs (Injector Driver Modules) can also cause this. IDM's are separate from the PCM/ECM (engine computer).

93 ford probe jerks when going into 2nd

Don't know if this will be of any help, but these cars have the same auto trans as the Mada 626s of the same age and they are a problematic transmission. They tend to blow up. Gerking could just mean it needs a service. ie: low fluid levels or 'worn out' fluid. It could also be an early sign of bigger problems.
We ended up selling our mazda because of the transmission. around $1800 to replace with reco but many people reporting reco trans failing within 2 yrs anyway.

15 amp fuse for tail lights inst. pannel and o/drive blows

If it has reverse and second only it is in limp mode, something has gone wrong to cause it to do this. Sometimes you can disconnect battery and it will reset, but as soon as the problems happens again it will go back into that mode. Bad internal solenoid on transmission, slipping clutches, no power to transmission computer ie blown fuse, fauty tansmission computer. Try having some one pull the codes, if they can't it is a blown fuse or bad transmission computer. Hope this helps
