SOURCE: my 1997 sunfire wont start. the engine will turn over.

its a sunfire , have a buddy sit in your car and you go to the back have him turn the key to the on position... not the run position and listen for a buzz or whiiirrrrrring sounds, do this several times if no noise chances are your fuel pump is dead, a common chev problem, if it has no noise you can try giving it a few good whacks where the fuel pump is located at the tank and try again more often than not this will get your fuel pump buzzing again and then you will know if your problem is at least in the front or the back..

SOURCE: 2000 Sunfire coolant problem. Engine overheating,

ok, its time for a radiator flush. there is major sludge in the internals of this radiator. Make sure the thermostat is in the correct position as well. I've seen many cars come into my shop with the thermostat inserted backwards.

Timing CHAIN tensioner you mean? Better have that noise checked ASAP. It may be a problem with the timing chain.

I have a 1996 Pontiac Sunfire I don't know how much antifreeze put in it they say you can't add water to it so how many gallons of antifreeze do I put in it thank you in advance

If the system is empty, it will usually hold about 1 1/2 to 1 3/4 gallons of liquid. You can add water, but you want to make sure it is distilled water. you do not want to use tap water as the minerals will clog up your system causing more expensive future repairs. But you also do not want straight water as the boiling and freezing points are not optimal. Your best bet is to use premixed universal coolant.

have a compression test done to check the head gasket/s, cracked heads . Use the compression test to see if the rings have been damaged (low compression on all cylinders) If you had to put a gallon of water in the radiator the it is not looking good for the motor.

2002 Pontiac Sunfire lost compresion while driving after running hot.

How do you know it lost compression? Does it seem to spin freely without resistance wen trying to start it? Or do you hear the normal chugging engine noise (on starting)? If cranking the engine sounds normal, you will need to have an experienced mechanic check it out if it does not start. If it overheated while driving and stalled, but now starts, you need to check the coolant level. If it full, or you fill it and overheats again, it's likely you'll need the thermostat replaced. If you crank the engine and it spinning really fast, or fastr than usual, it's most likely the timeing belt is broken and needs replacing. This is usually a big job, and you need find out if this failure would affect other areas like valve stems. That is you need to know if this is an "interference engine". If so there is much more involved. Good luck.

Daughter was driving on the highway, car lost power then engine stopped, will crank over, but will not start, engine sounds as if it is cranking easier than before, timing belt is good, any suggestions?

Neons have a bad habit of blowing the cam sensor. Located on the back of the engine.( drivers side) Square looking mounted on the head. Have the codes checked, this will point you in the right direction.

check compression on each cylinder and fuel pressure,I dont know if you have the tools, but for that engine whit 200,000 miles,I think the compression is down,at least you got to have 75 of compression on each cylinder.

I have no visible leaks yet the car is losing coolant?

It sounds to me like you may have a blown head gasket, the water may be going out the exhaust, perform a compression test on each cylinder.

Need timing marks 2.4 sunfire after installing water pump

YOU WILL SEE A HOLE IN THE CAM GEAR THAT A 3/8 BOLT WILL FIT INTO. PUT A BOLT INTO THE HOLES OF BOTH CAM GEARS. THEN LINE UP THE CRANK PULLEY KEYWAY AT ABOUT 12 O'CLOCK WITH THE MARK ON THE ENGINE BLOCK.

MAKE SURE TO COMPRESS THE CHAIN TENSIONER AND RELEASE IT WHEN THE CHAIN IS IN POSITION.
