You need to get the computer scanned and the codes read. You could go to autozone to have the codes read. By your description I'd be willing to bet it has at least a p0300 code which is a random missfire. While it could be many things causing the missfire/sputtering the most likely culprit is spark plugs or the ignition coil as they are known to go bad commonly on those motors.

Unfortunately they aren't exactly a walk in the park to do. Navigators are one of the more difficult vehicles to replace spark plugs on as the cowl overhangs the motor quite a bit.

So the lean code was the only code in there? A p0171 or p0172? This is usually caused by a vacuum leak or a bad/dirty mass air flow sensor. Was it both banks or just one? Also check your air filter.

Check engine light came on today and didn't go off. The car is sputtering and loosing power. Just had a new air filter, battery mounts and an oil change done. Need to find out what the problem is or it's...

Thanks for choosing FixYa and welcome. Since your check engine light is on, you need to take it to Autozone or Advanced to have it scanned. They will do this for free and it will probably lead back to your problem. The light is on because the computer has detected a problem with your vehicle. In all honesty, there are a hundred or so things that turn on a check engine light. That is why it is important to get it scanned. This is your best bet that way you are not throwing your money and time away on parts that you don't need.

I have 1999 Lincoln Navigator with 170,000 miles on it. It has stalled on me 2 times in the last 3 weeks. It will always act up when the engine is in a slight strain like going up small to moderate...

I bought my 2003 Navigator new in June 2003. It was built in May 2003. The instrument cluster ha to be replaced twice (under warranty). Later, the dealership determined the original and the replacement clusters were from a batch of clusters (left over) from the 2002 production run.

Ford was great back in the day. I have owned Ford products since 1986. When my Nav with 130,876 documented miles does start to "give up the ghost" I will for the first time be looking at Asian vehicles - Toyota, Hyundai or Genesis.

The 2003 Lincoln Navigator had a LOT of complaints in Consumer Buying Guide back in 2003 regarding the electrical systems. The Air Ride is the most prevalent complaint.

2003 lincoln navigator sputtering while driving

Hello, what you need to do first is get a scan of the engine. You can get a free scan at Autozone, Oreillys, Advance and perhaps your local places. Some faults will be recorded in the onboard computer, ask for Alternator test too. If you can get a Code number we can explain it for you.

Other defects, like Vacuum leaks and fuelpump pressure need different testing. This sounds like a EGR Solenoid going bad, but not bad enough to establish a check engine light. If you temporarily disconnect and plug the Vacuum hose to the EGR valve, you can drive it and see if the sputtering stops with the part eliminated. This may trigger a check engine light but the Code can be erased with a scanner or by disconnecting the NEG terminal of the Battery. The preferred method is to use a scanner(Autozone, etc.). I have the identical Year engine in my truck.

Vacuum leaks- use a spray water bottle and go aroung the gaskets on the Intake manifold while the engine is running. Also spray the Brake booster and if the RPM changes at either place you need to fix the leak or replace a part. Fuel pressure-This requires a gauge test on the fuel rail test port. Your fuel Regulator can be sticking, dirty fuel filter, fuelpump going out, the tests will tell. You can take it to an Independent or Dealer for these tests.

I hope you find my solutions helpful and please let me know what you discovered.

My 1999 lincoln navagator will sputter upon excelleration no check engine light, have had problem before turned out to be coil pack could it be again?

Coils are usually the problem on these engines. I'd replace all at once to prevent this problem from repeating.
