When my light illuminated I checked the transmission fluit and it was very low. I found a leak where the transmission meets the engine (when I moved the dust cover about a cup of fluid hit the ground. I'm told that it is one of 3 things: input shaft seal and bushing; cracked torque converter; bad front pump. I don't know which it is but I am going to add Lucas transmission stop leak to the transmission. Anyone had similar problems and wha t was the "fix" cost? Looks like your computer is detecting a transmission/transaxle problem. Have you had your filter changed in the tansmission yet? Are you a little low on transmission fluid? Is the transmission fluid high like it's overfilled? Is your transmission fluid brownish and smell burnt? Just a couple of things you might need to look at. You may or even should take it to a reputible transmission shop and have them run a scan on it to see what the problem is. I know this doesn't seem like much help to you at this point and time but I would have it taken care of before any damage may happen.
I have a feeling I know what light you are talking about. If it is the one in the RPM gauge area on the bottom to the left side, Check your coolant leval. I hope that's the one and hope this helped. Good luck.
First off you need an owner's manual. You can get a free one here.

The light that looks like a gear with an exclamation point inside indicates there is a problem with the transmission. May just be low of transmission fluid. To check the level dive the car until the transmission is warm, park on a level surface, place gear shift in park with engine running, and check transmission fluid level. Add only if necessary and do not overfill. If it is not low of fluid then seek professional help. The exclamation point in a circle under the fuel gauge next to the Brake light indicates you are low of brake fluid. Check the level of the brake fluid. If it is low you more than likely need to check your brake pads as they are worn out.
Car's transmission's gone into limp mode. "Limp Mode", is where your transmission's ECU keeps the trans from killing itself. Have you noticed a difference in acceleration? When you get on the highway are your RPM's higher than normal?
Limp Mode restricts your engine and transmission from working itself too hard to keep it from messing something up. Could keep it from getting to certain gears, keep it from revving too high.
It could be the transmission ECU (its computer). Then again it could be the transmission. Take it to a mechanic or a friend with a ECU code reader. That will tell you a better idea of what could be wrong.
