Time delay relay for interior lights

Where is the time delay relay located that controls the interior lights. They continue to stay on after turning off and closing doors. Had to remove all the interior bulbs.

I would suspect you have a bad door switch on one of the doors or liftgate. They are usually plunger switches. Try pusing them in one at a time and see f the lights go out. Hold it in long enough to account for the time delay.

Generic Electronic Module (GEM)/Central Timer Module (CTM) Controlled Functions
The generic electronic module (GEM) is equipped on four-wheel drive vehicles with power windows. The central timer module (CTM) is equipped only on two-wheel drive vehicles without power windows.
NOTE: GEM/CTM diagnostics are compatible with New Generation STAR (NGS) Tester.
The GEM/CTM incorporates the functions of several different modules into one, and offers diagnostics to easily locate and repair concerns affecting the subsystems that it controls.
The GEM/CTM constantly monitors the systems under its control and reports a concern in the form of a diagnostic trouble code (DTC). A DTC can be retrieved with NGS Tester through the communication link.
NGS Tester is a menu-driven tester that allows the user to run specific tests. NGS Tester can isolate faults in the GEM/CTM subsystems through a symptom-driven diagnostic procedure. Connecting NGS Tester to the GEM/CTM communication link will not alert the GEM/CTM. If the GEM/CTM is "asleep" when the diagnostic connector is plugged in, the GEM/CTM must be "awakened". If the communication link cannot be established, it is advised to turn the ignition to RUN.
NOTE: The GEM/CTM has a sleep function to minimize battery consumption. During the sleep mode, the GEM/CTM turns off all outputs and monitors only the following:
  • Door ajar (driver door, passenger door, liftgate, LH rear and RH rear doors).
  • Key-in-ignition.
  • Key in RUN or ACC.
  • Two-step unlock switch (unarm switch).
  • Digital TR sensor.
  • Illuminated entry request (remote anti-theft personality [RAP] module).
If a change of status occurs at one of these inputs while the GEM/CTM is asleep, the GEM/CTM will "wake up." When the GEM/CTM awakens, it performs an internal self-test, and begins normal operation. At this point, the GEM/CTM will have all of its functions operational.
The GEM/CTM will go into the sleep mode immediately after both of the following conditions have been met:
  • Key in OFF or key not in ignition.
  • After 45 minutes with no change in any wake-up input.
The GEM/CTM control system has two modes of operation; the normal operating mode and the tester-dependent diagnostics mode.
The normal operation of the GEM/CTM can detect errors. An integral part of the normal GEM/CTM operation is the continuous diagnostic capability. Continuous diagnostics detects errors and changes the GEM/CTM control strategy. There is no warning lamp for the GEM/CTM; therefore, a DTC concern will direct you to the GEM/CTM. Examples of faults that may be detected during normal operation include:
NOTE: The GEM/CTM can only detect open circuit/short to GRD faults when the GEM/CTM in not energizing a load, and short to battery faults when the GEM/CTM is attempting to energize a load.
  • GEM/CTM continuous self-test (RAM, ROM, EEPROM, A/D checking).
  • Output driver monitoring (open circuit/short to ground [GRD], short to power).
  • Illogical combinations of input signals.

Try spraying WD-40 into the door latching mechanism (door side). I learned this fix after two battery replacements, but have only had to spray twice in the more than seven years of ownership

I would have the headlight switch checked. Interior lights take their power from the headlight switch.

SOURCE: 2003 Explorer door ajar light stay on when all doors are closed

I had this problem on my 2003 explorer and took WD40 and gave the lock mechanism a good dose where it meets the clasp on the door jam. Then open and close the doors a couple of times to get them working. They get gummed up and sometimes have a tendency to stick.

I have a 94 Explorer headlights will not go out even when ignition is off and key out.

Headlamp Delay System - Autolamp, Aerostar and Explorer
The autolamp system provides light sensitive automatic on-off control of the exterior lamps normally controlled by the headlamp switch . The autolamp system keeps the lamps on for a preselected period of time after the ignition switch (11572) is turned off. The preselected time lapse can be adjusted by the operator up to three minutes.
On Aerostar, the system consists of a light sensor amplifier (13A018) , automatic headlamp dimmer relay (13A025) , and a time-delay headlamp dimmer sensor control (13C105) which includes an ON/OFF switch.
The Explorer consists of an ON/OFF switch, a light sensor and a time delay control which are part of the inside rear view mirror (17700) and two automatic headlamp dimmer relays .
Connections to the vehicle lamps parallel the connections to headlamp switch requiring the headlamp switch to be turned to the OFF position for the automatic control feature.
In normal operation, the system will turn the exterior lamps on when the natural outside light available to the light sensor amplifier decreases below a predetermined level, such as at sunset. Also, the lamps will automatically turn off when the level of outside light exceeds a predetermined level during daylight hours.
On Aerostar, the light sensor amplifier is mounted under a group of slots in the upper instrument panel in front of the driver. The light sensor amplifier must always be exposed to outside light to function properly. Do not place any items over the group of slots in the upper instrument panel which may block light to the light sensor amplifier.
On Explorer, the light sensor amplifier is on the back side of the interior rear view mirror. Do not place any items on the mirror that will block the sensor.
The headlamp dimmer sensor control thumbwheel is located next to the headlamp switch for Aerostar and on the interior rear view mirror for Explorer. The autolamp system is functional for automatic operation when the on-off control is moved from the OFF position. The closer the control is moved toward the max-delay, the longer the lamps will stay on after the ignition switch is turned off.
Pulling out the headlamp switch will override the autolamp. Automatic operation will not be possible until the headlamp switch is turned off.
Can you operate the headlamps manually, do they work ok? I don't like auto-lamps. Just my opinion.

Your interior lights are controlled by the GEM - generic electronic module !
Battery Saver The battery saver relay is controlled by the generic electronic module (GEM) and is located in the fuse junction panel. The battery saver relay is designed to supply B+ voltage to the following:
  • dome and map lamp switches
  • visor lamps
  • glove box lamp switch
  • interior lamp switch
  • interior courtesy lamp relay
  • delayed accessory relay
The function of the battery saver relay is to prevent excessive battery drain by interior lighting circuits. The GEM supplies a ground signal to the battery saver relay anytime one of the wake-up inputs of the GEM is activated to operate the battery saver relay. A wake-up command is sent when:
  • any door becomes ajar or is opened or closed.
  • the ignition key is inserted or removed.
  • the ignition switch is turned from OFF to RUN.
  • the ignition switch is turned from OFF to ACC.
  • a wake-up request is received from the remote anti-theft personality (RAP) module (if equipped).
  • The GEM will maintain the ground input with ignition in RUN or for 40 minutes from the last input activation with ignition in the OFF position. After 40 minutes the ground signal is discontinued.
This de-engergizes the battery saver relay preventing B+ voltage supply to the controlled switches and circuits.
  • Courtesy Lamp On Continuously

2003 Chevrolet tracker has a clicking relay when car is off. kills battery, interior dome light stays on, sound stops when lights are turned on

try locating the relay and identify its purpose.relays have two power sources but require the delivery of ground to switch,this ground is supplied from te vehicles pcm or ecm.relay could be faulty if its a time delayed relay it may be "sticking" and not stopping the draw from power source. but keep in mind that GMs are notorious for the body control module to fail.(this module may be integrated into the PCM.but may be a independent unit{{found under drivers seat in most full size SUV and PU after 1999.}} have u attempted disconnecting the battery for about 10min.? this may reset and correct your issue.

Door ajar light stay on and inside light

The interior lights are controlled by a combination of door switches and manual switches. There is usually a centralized controller that receives ground signals from switches in each door, when opened. If any of the switches sends a ground signal, the controller turns on the lights. Any given light may also have a manual switch that can turn the light on and perhaps off, though there are usually some lights that cannot be turned off without closing all doors. Many controllers incorporate a delay and perhaps also a dimmer to allow the light to continue for some time after the last door is closed.
The first thing to check when the lights are staying on is the instrument lights dimmer (if it is also used as an interior lights switch) or an interior lights switch that may have been turned on by accident.
If not that, the most likely cause is one of the door switches stuck on (closed). This can be caused by a failure of the switch or a consequence of the door lock being adjusted too loose. A good test for this is to have someone go around the car and push in on each door to see if one of them will turn the light off. Any door that can turn the light off when pushed must have it's lock adjusted in tighter. If this test doesn't fix it, check the individual switches. If you can locate the switches, pull them out of the car body. If the lights go out, the switch is bad. In case the switch has two wires rather than one, pulling the connector off the switch should have the same effect. Test each switch in this way. If you have all switches disabled and the lights are still on, the problem is likely to be either one of the switch wires grounding out to the car body or the interior lights control module shorted on.

Power door panel does not work. windows will not come down and interior lights stay on.

the time delay relay for the interior lights could be the problem however check the door switchs in the door frames to mke sure there working correctly and also check the switches on the door panels with a ohm meter to make sure they show continuity both ways if they dont then/ replace the switches if they do show that then suspect the motors and or motor grounds

Interior lights stay on

Any time something stays on that hasn't ben turned on then you should look at the relay that controls that component. The relay is stuck in the closed position and feeding power to the lights. Have the interior light relay replaced and that should fix it. Hope this helps. Good luck.

Is it an old van? Can you see on the door frame a switch does it come out when the door is opened (push in and out a few times). 3 position switch on always / off always and door switch?

hey

Id say the relay is gone on the light....you can buy a timered relay in any motor factors and wire it up to the light!! Very easy job just take your time and be tidy!!
