If you push the clutch all the way down and the engine doesn't turn over, it could be a battery or wiring problem, or maybe a bad starter. If you have checked all these, check the clutch safety switch under the instrument panel.

SOURCE: 2000 chevy cavalier wont turn over, lights and radio work

The starter motor on a car takes a lot of energy, you may be able to use the radio but not have enough power for the starter. You also might not be able to start it because the motor's starter or it's relay is bad. So here's what to do:

Check the connections on the battery, try loosening the connections and moving them around a bit, then tighten them down good.

Next go try to start it up again. If it still doesn't respond, turn your headlights on and see if they are still bright. If they are, then I would look into the starter or the starter relay.

The relay is in a box somewhere under your hood, possibly with some motor related fuses. Take the cover off and look at the under side of it. The cover should have a sticker displaying which relays do what. Now look for the air conditioner relay. Check to see if the air conditioner and starter relays have the same number printed or stamped on them. ONLY if the numbers mach, put the air conditioner relay in place of the starter relay, and try to start it again.

If you still get nothing, then it is either a bad starter or wire somewhere. On this car it may be a bit difficult to find and reach, but try to get to the starter on the bottom of the car. You can find pictures online of what it looks like if you are not sure. Play with the wires and knock on the starter with something hard like a rock or hammer. It doesn't take too much to do it, even a firm punch can do it, just don't break it. If this works then the starter is bad and needs serviced or replaced.

If there is still no response after this, there is nothing more you can do unless you are capable of taking things apart and checking the wiring. Good luck!

SOURCE: replace a fuel pump on 2000 chevy cavalier

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
(see Figures 1 and 2)

CAUTION The fuel injection system remains under pressure, even after the engine has been turned OFF. The fuel system pressure must be relieved before disconnecting any fuel lines. Failure to do so may result in fire and/or personal injury.

  1. Relieve the fuel system pressure using the recommended procedure.
  2. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  3. Drain the fuel tank, then remove the fuel tank from the vehicle.
  4. While holding the modular fuel sender assembly down, remove the snap-ring from the designated slots located on the retainer.

WARNING The modular fuel sender assembly may spring up from its position. When removing the modular fuel sender from the tank, be aware that the reservoir bucket is full of fuel. It must be tipped slightly during removal to avoid damage to the float.
  1. Remove the external fuel strainer.
  2. Detach the Connector Position Assurance (CPA) piece from the electrical connector and detach the fuel pump electrical connector.
  3. Gently release the tabs on the sides of the fuel sender at the cover assembly. Begin by squeezing the sides of the reservoir and releasing the tab opposite the fuel level sensor. Move clockwise to release the second and third tabs in the same manner.
  4. Lift the cover assembly out far enough to detach the fuel pump electrical connection.
  5. Rotate the fuel pump baffle counterclockwise and remove the baffle and pump assembly from the retainer.
  6. Slide the fuel pump outlet out of slot, then remove the fuel pump outlet seal.

To install:
  1. Install the fuel pump outlet seal, then slide the fuel pump outlet in the slots of reservoir cover.
  2. Install the fuel pump and baffle assembly onto the reservoir retainer and rotate clockwise until seated.
  3. Install the lower retainer assembly partially into the reservoir. Line up all 3 sleeve tabs. Press the retainer onto the reservoir making sure all 3 tabs are firmly seated.

Gently pull on the fuel pump reservoir from retainer to assure a secure fastening. If not secure, replace the entire fuel sender.
  1. Attach the fuel pump connector.
  2. Fasten the CPA connector to the fuel sender cover.
  3. Install a new external fuel strainer.
  4. Install the modular fuel sender.
  5. Install the fuel tank in the vehicle.
  6. Connect the negative battery cable.
  7. Pressurize the fuel system and verify no leaks.

I have a 98 Chevy cavalier , it has Manuel transmission, it will only go in 3rd and 4th gear, what could be the problem

It could obviously be the tranny is gone, but you would want to make sure you have enough clutch flood and the clutch is fully engaging. I had a leak in my 98 cavalier clutch fluid, and when it got low, it would not fully engage the clutch, simply making it hard to get into gear. Its DOT3 fluid. If so try reversing a little bit and gently tiring to get into gear. I believe 1st and 2nd gear share the same gear selection fork inside the tranny. Drain fluid and look for metal.

1999 chevrolet cavalier standard transmition engage cluch car will start go into gear but will not move what is problem

The clutch pressure plate may have failed or the clutch plate may be worn to the rivets therefore not engaging the transmission. Either of these would be making a loud noise when the clutch is engaged. Another problem could be that the hydraulic fluid is low and not allowing the throwout bearing to engage the clutch. Get underneath the car and have someone push the clutch pedal down and make sure the arm that moves the throwout bearing is moving correctly.

AC Compressor not engaging on 2000 Chevy Impala. Fuses and AC relay okay. No power at compressor. Need wiring diagram. Also need to know if compressor requires 12v for operation. If not what should voltage...

When your R-134a runs too low it will NOT engage the compressor. You need to refill your a/c system before the clutch will engage, I also suggest finding the leak.

Chevy cavalier will not start. Key to Aux will get power. Key forward will not get anything.

I guess this vehicle is automatic and if so The chances are the inhibitor switch is faulty. This is the switch that tells the car that it is in Park or neutraland therefore ok to engage starter motor. You can some times wiggle the shift stick in and out of park whilst holding key forward, should the starter engage or try to engage then you will know this is the fault and may need either replacement or adjustment.
