I have a 1999 Oldsmobile Alero with the 2.4 liter engine. I had a leaking water pump so I replaced it. While I was at it I replaced the timing chain, crankshaft sprocket, cam sprockets, tensioner, thermostat and gasket, exhaust manifold gasket, intake manifold gasket, spark plugs and the oil filter. It starts up and runs good but it overheats if you let it run too long and if you drive it even a mile or so. I flushed and bled the coolant system and it still overheats. I checked the compression in the plugs to see if it maybe had a blown head gasket but it all cylinders are good. The reservoir cap seems to be working ok as well. It seems the system is building pressure. Oh and the fans kick on as normal. I pulled the thermostat and checked to make sure it worked as well. I'm at a loss and don't know what to do next. Please Help!

Check the radiator for any blockage. After the engine is warmed up and coolant is circulating good, the lower radiator hose should be pretty warm, just not quite as hot as the upper hose. If it feels cold, the radiator may have some blockage.
Sounds like you have covered everything else. Might want to double check for trapped air. Are you certain the temperature gauge is correct?

SOURCE: 1999 Olds Alero leaking coolant and running rough

in my experience it sounds like a head gasket problem it maybe leaking into the cylinders or could be a small leak from one of the hoses I would do a compression test just to make sure and then pressurize the entire system using radiator and coolant tester if pressure holds then its not a leak as far as the fans go just have the car running when it reaches the middle of the temp gauge it should come one if not you may need to run check on temp sensor or fan switch and fans them selves I would follow repair manual troubleshooting section on heating and cooling haynes or chiltons will do.

SOURCE: engine overheating-----1994 Olds Cutlass Supreme 3.4 liter v/6

There seems to be an air pocket or no antifreeze in engine block. Try this method disconnect upper radiator hose and pour water directly into hose down into engine block until it full. when its filled reconnect hose and fill up radiator. as the vehicle warms up open bleeder valve on the thermostat housing and release air from system. open slowly and BE VERY CAREFUL WATER WILL BE HOT, bleed until you get a steady stream opening and cosing valve. However if all of this don't work. You may have a bad pump. Good Luck

SOURCE: Spark? cylinder head? stuck valve? cylinder wall porosity?

That cap was most likley broken upon pulling off. You need new wires.

SOURCE: 1999 olds alero leaking coolant

problem could be heads bolts . i put new bolts in put a little sealer on them . make sure your bolt holes is clean free from debris. put a lillte sealer on intake gasket on top and bottom where coolants travel. if all was done . drain engine oil in clean container .set it aside. take radiator cap off .you a coolant pressure rise kit .put a pan under oil pan with drain plug still off .pressure your radiator about 10 psi. make sure you have antifreeze in radiator and engine . when you pressure up to 10 psi look under the car if coolant comes out oil pan. you got leaking head gasket. if not .put oil pan plug back on . put oil back in car . check your freeze plugs also.

I have 2001 alero. Yesterday the coolant light came on and the engine just died. Any ideas maybe fuel pump or timing belt or could it be the water pump

IF LOW COOLANT LIGHT CAME ON ENGINE SHUT OFF BECAUSE IT GOT TOO HOT AND OVER HEATED.WHEN YOU HAVE LOW COOLANT.YOU COULD HAVE LEAKING RADIATOR.YOU COULD HAVE LEAKING RADIATOR HOSES AND WATER PUMP. ADD MORE COOLANT IN CAR RADIATOR UNTIL YOU AT FULL COLD MARK ON THE OVER FLOW COOLANT TANK START THE CAR LET IDLE UNTIL ENGINE GET OPERATING TEMPERATURE.RAISE YOUR HOOD LOOK FOR LEAKS THE RADIATOR PRESSURE WILL PUSH COOLANT OUT WHERE LEAKS COULD BE.LOOK AROUND RADIATOR AND COOLANT HOSES.LOOK AT WATER PUMP.IF YOU SEE COOLANT LEAKING AT WATER PUMP REPLACE IT.

I need to replace my water pump. Do you have a step by step diagram for a 1999 olds alero?

  • 1IF THIS IS A ALERO 4 MAJOR UNDERTAKEING TAKE IT TO THE SHOP IF NOT HOPEFULLY THIS WILL HELP.

Remove the negative battery cable. Using a screwdriver, loosen the screw that connects the negative battery cable to the battery post. Pull the cable away from the post.

  • 2

Lift th car using a jack. Support the Oldsmobile Alero with jack stands and the engine using a lift or some other engine support device.

  • 3

Drain the Oldsmobile Alero's colling system by opening the cap on top of the radiator and unplugging the drain plug underneath the radiator. Position a large container under the drain hole to catch the draining coolant.

  • 4

Disconnect the components that lead to the water pump with an adjustable wrench Lay them out in the order removed. In order, these parts include the automatic transaxle (if equipped), front wheel on the right side, splash shield, water pump sprocket and the access plate to the timing cover.

  • 5

Use the access plate bolts to secure the water pump sprocket holding tool to the engine cover. Remove the pump bolts, front cover, thermostat housing, water pump feed pipe and two engine bolts using the adjustable wrench. Lift off the water pump.

  • 6

Remove the bolts that secure the water pump to the block. Take off or scrape away the gasket. Remove and discard the o-ring between the water pump inlet pipe and the pump.

  • Install a New Water Pump
  • 1

Spread a small amount of sealant on the water pump, on the areas where it mounts to the engine. Place the gasket on the sealant. Position the water pump onto the engine.

  • 2

Insert the new bolts into the water pump. Torque the bolts to 89 inch pounds torque. Reconnect the other components in the order removed using an adjustable wrench.

  • 3

Re-insert the drain plug into the radiator. Remove the engine support and jack stands. Lower the Olsmobile Alero to the floor.

  • 4

Refill the radiator with coolant according to the instructions in your owner's manual. Screw on the radiator cap. Attach the negative battery cable to the post. Close the hood and test the car.

My 1999 alero is overheating and engine coolant is leaking

hi, i dont know about the dipstick, but your overheating problem is most likely to be the thermostat...sounds like its stuck in the closed position, not allowing colder water to circulate, hence the overheating.......needs changing

    Water pump leaking?

Water pump would be on the other end. There is a water housing bolted to that end of the head by the p/s pump. This housing is plastic and tends to crack. check it.
