Do just what it says, have it serviced and it sounds like you need to take it to a qualified mechanic. It probably needs lubricating and reprogramming.
Most of these systems come with a fail safe that shuts down to prevent permanent damage to parts etc.

If you have no reverse then yes it needs to be rebuilt. as far as the whining it could be in one of the differentials. or in trans? just depends on where you hear it

I had the same solution with 2005 blazer......dont know how but this worked...........removed the courtesy lifgt fuse for approx. 10 minutes....put fuse back in and voila..able to shift out of 4 wheel drive

chk the linkage under the truck for any foriegn objects. block the tires and have a friend put light pressure on the shifter while you lightly tap the linkage.
