SOURCE: where is the computer located for a poniac sunfire

Hello Cheryl.
The powertrain control module is mounted in the engine compartment on the right side beside the strut tower towards the firewall.
It is rare to have a problem with these. I have many customers with these model cars and have never replaced one.
I hope you find your problem quickly.
Best of the festive season to you.

SOURCE: how do you unlock a igniiton on a 1998 pontiact sunfire

its possible that you need to try and turn the steering wheel left and right (IT WILL TAKE SOME EFFORT) while trying to turn the key. and you dont need to put pressure on the key , turn it same as you would when starting it normally. you dont want to break the key off.also try and put the gear shift lever up into park at the same time( thats asuming its a automatic with shift lever on the steering colum) somtimes you can get the car to close to a curb or somthing and having pressure on the tires in a less than straight position will get you locked in on the sterring wheel, shift lever and key lock possition . so with one hand pull the steering wheel left with as much pressure as you can and at same time trying to turn key with your right hand.

It does sound like you have a passkey (security) issue. If the BCM does not recognize the key cylinder code the BCM will send a comand to the PCM to shut down the fuel system.
When you say you replace the "ignition switch", was it the switch or the tumbler.
If the tumbler was replaced you will have to relearn the key code.
Let me know if the key tumbler was replaced and I will tell you how to relearn the key code.

We are having trouble turning the key in the ignition...does this mean we have to replace it? We no longer have the original key, and it is a copied one that we are using. Could a new ignition key be the...

First try lubricating the ignition tumbler assembly. Purchase a tube of spray graphite at any hobby store of department store. Spray inside the tumbler and then see if this helps. If the key you now have is severely worn a new key might solve the problem. If not, then you may need a new tumbler assembly.

My key gets stuck in the ignition and my car wont start I have been able to jump it with my clutch

If your key turns to the start position and won't start but will if clutched and you can't turn the key all the way back to get it out, then you need to have your floor shifter cable adjusted. The cable may even needs to be replaced. If your key looks good and not worn or you have tried a new key, you have a tumbler in the lock assembly sticking. You may try a very small amout of dry graphite to see if that will loosen the tumbler otherwise you will need someone see if new tumblers will fix the ignition lock or if you need a new ignition lock assembly. I would think it is most likely the cable though.

98 pontiac Sunfire shuts self off

You might not need a tumble, the sys is controled by the key, and transponder, and the ecm. Most auto locks smiths can come out and check the system, might just need a key re-programed
