1988 Pontiac Lemans Runs Rough

My car has recently developed an issue with a hard start and rough idle at startup for the first 30 seconds, at which time it levels off. From there the car will go from running smoothly to sputtering while going down the road. Everytime it does this the Check Engine Light comes on. As soon as it quits sputtering, the light goes back off. I have changed Coil, Plugs, wires, Fuel injector, fuel filter, and throttle position sensor. There is also occasional "clatter" in the engine upon acceleration (Possibly Detonation?) Any ideas?

SOURCE: rough idle

fuel filters rarley cause idle problems. i would look at the egr valve or possible vaccume leaks.

Before changing you pcm try cleaning your egr valve. remove the valve and see if its stuck in the open position if so use a small pick to clean around the spring.

i am trying to install an aftermarket temperature guage with capillary tube into my 1988 crown victoria ltd 5.0 efi. where does the capillary tube mount?

SOURCE: 02 Chevy Avalanche Off idle engine runs rough then smooths out

The clamp bolt in the center of the steering column put a small cut in the #5 ignition wire and sent the code to the computer for multiple ignition failures(I forget exactly the terminology that they used and what code; I think it was 0300). The arching must have told the computer to richen up the mixture because you could smell raw fuel. I replaced the wires and ran a can of Seafoam through one of the vacuum lines(brake booster) and all seems well. If I had listened to everything I read at other websites I would have been replacing the Cats and the Ignition Coils-very expensive items. Instead it cost me $50 for a set of wires.

It can be issue with low fuel pressure,the fuel pump is getting old both needs to be checked.Also get the IAC valve checked.

1988 Ford Taurus hard start problem

Change the coolant sensor located close to the thermostat housing. This is easy but do not over tighten it. You will have the same problem if you do. Tighten till it does not leak only.Good luck!

Idling problems may be cause buy a number of issues.  You may check out the fast idle control valve and PCV if they would need cleaning.  You can check out the timing it may be advanced, that is why you feel that the car runs hard.
