It is likely that its the sending unit in the tank. One way to determine if its the guage or the sending unit is to ground the wire from the guage and it should peg out. If it doesnt then its the guage if it does then its the sending unit.
There is a regulator on the back of the cluster that controls the signal to the temp and fuel guage. It could be out of whack. You may notice that your temp guage frequently reads hot even though your radiator coolant reads normal if you check it with a thermometer. This can cause the fuel gage to drift all over the place. I have a brand new tank unit and I have this problem. I just haven't gotten around to pulling my dash. If your fuel gauge is showing you in accurate readings this is normal to all vehicles that are not used to fill-up gas full regularly but sometimes the cause of the inacuracy is due to faulty float valve in the gas tank you need to replace it
If the trouble with the gauge started after you worked on it then you likely damaged or created a restriction to the movement of the sending unit. You will have to remove the tank and double-check your work.
You need to replace the fuel gauge sending unit. This is mounted on the side of the fuel pump assembly, inside the fuel tank. You will need to remove the fuel tank for this repair.
The fuel sending unit has a rhetrostat its a variable resitor ..As fuel is added the fuel lever mover along the rhetrostat and gives resitor signal to the fuel guage, the fuel gauge interpets this as level indicators to show on the gas tank.
very common. The sender in the gas tank is the problem.
It will need to be replaced some day
Both my gas tanks do the same thing in my F250. 1 tank stays full all the time and the other drops from full to about a half tank when I get to half a tank and then works so so till empty.
Well that tells me that someone installed the wrong fuel level sensor. Your going to have to drop the tank and pull the pump and float assymbly out. Then go to a parts store and get a sending unit that has the opposite resistance of that sending unit. Just wait until the tank is empty so its a lot lighter. You can call the parts store or go down and see if there is multiple sending units. The sending units work by resistance, when the tank is full the float moves up and turns a wheel in the sending unit, which either removes or increases the resistance causing the gauge to lower. The sending units either give full resistance at full or no resistance at full and then changes as the level goes down until it does the opposite at empty.
