Engine cranks, but won't start

It seems as if the fuel is not reaching the engine - could it be the fuel pump relay?

If so, where is it located?

Well it could be the fuel pump or a relay but your pump is in the tank and as for the relay just look under the hood on the driver side about midway towards the windshield you will see a relay box.
your car may also no be getting any spark or you may just have bad plugs

Well there is no shutoff relay, but there is a fuel pump relay that powers the pump.
I would check it first. The computer grounds the relay for 3 seconds when you crank the engine to boost fuel pressure. Once the engine starts the pump is powered only if you have oil pressure.

05 c240 turns over won't start

most likely you have a bad crank sensor or fuel problem you need to check fuel pressure ,if you have enough pressure ,most likely you need crank position sensor,if you don`t have fuel pressure ,it might be your fuel pump relay or the pump, i would start with the relay first very unexpensive. you can also hear the pump if it`s working by cranking the engine and listening rear of the car for a humming sound .
good luck

Won`t start when cold

No such thing on your car.
The temp sensor tells the computer what the engine coolant temp is.
If it were faulty you would get a check engine light.
I would have the fuel pressure checked before and after you crank the engine. The pump relay provides power to the pump when you turn the key on to recover some of the lost fuel pressure after the car sits. The one way valve in the pump is supposed to prevent the pressure from dropping.
If the fuel pressure drops to zero it could take some time to crank the engine enough to get it back up.

Could be the main or fuel run relay located in the compartment under the luggage rack, passenger side, main relay also, fuse for the fuel relay 8amp. Electronic Control Unit is also located there.

Could be electrical, Hook up a timing light, three leads: Power, Ground, and one that goes around the wire to #1 cyl. Turn the engine over and see if there's firing. Note: u can check all 4 spark plugs this way.

Fuse lead goes to pin 30 of the fuel relay, u can jump 30 across to 57 and check for the pumps running, if not, change-I suggest both relays, main and fuel run relays. Both pumps get their 12v DC from the fuel run relay, both should be running when you switch ignition switch to on, then a tachymetric signal is fed from the coil to the relay to keep it running.

check all your rounds on the body, behind kick panels, and in engine compartment. The relays you hear clicking are the power relay whcih turns your engine computer on. The other relay is the fuel pump relay, which is turned on by the engine computer. start there, report back.

PS. When you press the gas pedal to the floor during cranking, it shuts off the fuel supply to clear a flooded engine.

  • Hi, I can help.

  • The fuel pump relay is 4th over on the very bottom row of the relay panel under the hood. This can be the pump too. The pump holds pressure and when the back pressure switch fails the car won't start. Or the pump could just be out period. The fuel filter can do this too.

Fuel Pump Electrical Circuit
OPERATION
When the key is turned ON with out the engine running, the control module turns a fuel pump relay ON for two seconds. This builds up fuel pressure quickly. If the engine is not started within two seconds, the control module shuts the fuel pump OFF and waits until the engine starts. As soon as the engine is cranked, the control module turns the relay ON and runs the fuel pump.
When the engine is cranking or running, the control module receives the Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor reference pulses which in turn energize the fuel injectors. As a back-up system to the fuel pump relay, the fuel pump can also be turned ON by a fuel pump oil pressure switch. When the
engine reaches about 28 kPa (4 psi), and the fuel pump relay does not complete the circuit, the fuel pump oil pressure switch will close to complete the circuit to run the fuel pump.

An inoperative fuel pump relay can result in long cranking times, particularly if the engine is cold. The fuel pump oil pressure switch will turn ON the fuel pump as soon as oil pressure reaches about 28 kPa (4 psi).

You can test to see if the relay it's self is bad by swapping it temporarily with another relay. If your truck has AC then that one should be compatible. Just compare the two to see if they're the same and if so, try using the AC's relay.

Replace the FUEL PUMP RELAY. Its located in the under hood relay center. This relay primes the pump with the key on, about 2 seconds, then the pump will not run until the engine has oil pressure, then the fuel pump is energized.
