REMOVAL & INSTALLATION 1.8L Engine
(see Figures 1, 2, 3 and 4)

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Remove the timing belt covers.
3. Rotate the crankshaft and align the timing marks located on the camshaft pulleys and the seal plate.
4. Remove the crankshaft pulley and hub.
5. If the timing belt is to be reused, mark an arrow on the belt to indicate its rotational direction to enable correct re-installation.
6. Loosen the timing belt tensioner lockbolt and remove the timing belt.

To install:

1. Temporarily secure the timing belt tensioner in the far left position with the spring fully extended, then tighten the lockbolt.
2. Make sure the timing marks on the timing belt pulley (crankshaft sprocket) and the engine block (oil pump housing) are aligned.
3. Make sure the timing marks on the camshaft pulleys and the seal plate are aligned.
4. Install the timing belt.
5. Loosen the tensioner lockbolt. Using a suitable prying tool, position the timing belt tensioner so the timing belt is taut, then tighten the tensioner lockbolt.
6. Turn the crankshaft two turns clockwise and align the timing belt pulley mark with the mark on the engine block.

1. Make sure the camshaft pulley marks are aligned with the seal plate marks.

If the timing marks are not aligned, remove the belt and repeat the procedure.

when the ABS light stays on it means there is a fault present in the ABS system and the ABS has been disabled, as long as the light is on u just have regular brakes with no ABS, there are many thinbgs that can turn the light on, most common is one of the wheel speed sensors is defective, since these sensors are about $75-100 each and there are 4 of them guessing is a poor idea, so what u need to do is have the ABS systwem tested, there will be a fault code present to help narrow down the defective part or wiring.

There are many things that can cause your ABS light to come on. Some are serious, so you should never just ignore the light. But there are times when the light comes on and can be met with a simple solution. For instance, a dirty ABS wheel sensor can cause the system to trigger the ABS light during self evaluation. You'll be shocked when you see how much road gunk can accumulate on this very important sensor. Even if your ABS light hasn't made an appearance, it's a good idea to clean the sensor. A good time to do it would be during brake pad replacement when you have the wheels off anyway.
What You'll Need:

• Ratchet wrench and sockets
• Ratchet extension
• Jack
• Jack stands
• A strong rag

Begin by loosening your wheel lugs, then jack the front of the car up and rest it securely on jack stands. With the car safe, remove the wheel lugs and take the front wheels off. With the wheel off, turn the steering wheel all the way in, opposite the side your working on. For example if your working on the passenger side, turn the wheel all the way toward the drivers side.
Locate the ABS wheel sensor. Remove the bolts that attach it to the rest of the suspension. You may also need to remove a few bolts to pull the sensor away from the vehicle for cleaning. Follow the line to see if there are more bolts. Remember not to force it or pull too hard. Then along the line theres another two 10mm bolts, that need to be removed, just follow the abs sensor line to get at them. With the sensor free, take your rag and wipe the sensor until its clean. I prefer not to use any chemicals on the sensor to avoid potential problems. If you need to, use mild soapy solution and rinse well. Reinstall the sensor in the same manner it was removed.

2.0L Engine
SOHC ENGINE
See Figure 8

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Raise the car and support it with safety stands.

CAUTION Never open, service or drain the radiator or cooling system when hot; serious burns can occur from the steam and hot coolant. Also, when draining engine coolant, keep in mind that cats and dogs are attracted to ethylene glycol antifreeze and could drink any that is left in an uncovered container or in puddles on the ground. This will prove fatal in sufficient quantities. Always drain coolant into a sealable container. Coolant should be reused unless it is contaminated or is several years old.

1. Drain and recycle the engine coolant.
2. Remove the timing belt.
3. Unfasten the timing belt tensioner bolt and remove the tensioner.
4. Disconnect the lower radiator hose from the water pump.
5. Lower the car and disconnect the heater hose from the water pump.
6. Unfasten the three bolts and one stud from the water pump.
7. Remove the water pump.

To install:

WARNING Do not use any abrasive grinding discs to remove gasket material. Use a plastic manual gasket scraper to remove the gasket residue. Be careful not to scratch or gouge the aluminum sealing surfaces when cleaning them.

1. Clean the gasket surfaces thoroughly until all traces of the old gasket residue are removed. Inspect the gasket mating surfaces, both must be clean and flat.
2. Install a new gasket and the water pump.
3. Install the water pump bolts and stud to 15-22 ft. lbs. (20-30 Nm).
4. Connect the heater hose to the pump.
5. Raise the car and support it with safety stands.
6. Connect the lower radiator hose to the pump.
7. Install the timing belt tensioner and tighten the bolt to 15-22 ft. lbs. (20-30 Nm).
8. Install the timing belt and lower the car.
9. Fill the cooling system with the proper amount and mixture of coolant.
10. Start the engine and check for leaks.
    

DOHC ENGINE
See Figure 9

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

3. Unfasten the splash shield bolts and remove the shield.
4. Loosen the water pump pulley retaining bolts, then remove the drive belt.
5. Remove the A/C compressor bolts and move the compressor aside.
6. Unfasten the water pump retainers and remove the pump from the middle timing belt cover.

To install:

1. Install the water pump and tighten the retainers to 17 ft. lbs. (24 Nm).
2. Place the A/C compressor in position and tighten the mounting bolts.
3. Install the drive belt and tighten the water pump pulley bolts.
4. Install the splash shield and tighten the bolts.
5. Fill the cooling system with the proper amount and mixture of coolant.
6. Connect the negative battery cable.
7. Start the engine and check for leaks.
