Most likely worn ball joints...you can also check the shock mounts to see if the rubber mount groments are still there.

Visit www.car-part.com. You can search all over the country for junk yards who sell an oil pan for your cougar (you can also use an oil pan from a thunderbird).

Check your local library for repair manuals...

My cougar does the same, it starts and then about 1 minute later (or so) the check engine light comes on and the car idles really high, with black smoke out the exhaust. It stays in second gear i think and it will not shift out of it. Max speed is 40 mph with the rpms screaming, it will go off after a long time but this is agrivating. I have a 94 mercury cougar xr7 3.8 ltr Any help please?

The tensioner is not adjustable, the spring in it provides a preset tension, I don't understand what you did, but if it came apart then most likely you damaged it, buy a new one, if you get it wrong and it falls apart on the road you are stuck.
