I have the same problem with my 1987 ford ranger XLT 2.3 fuel injection.
I got power coming out of the coial an distrbitur put new timing belt on fix starter drive new solenoid but when you try to start it at the switch the engine spens over but it wont start? but when you rool it off an pop the cluch in 3rd geer it will start an run fine.

I recommend checking / replacing both the fuel and air filters. If one of them is clogged it will mess up the fuel/air mixture which could cause the truck to stall. I hope this helps you out.
Ignition module comes to mind. If you've tested for spark (holding spark plug wire near the block when cranking) and the cap and rotor are good, it seems the module is the only other area left to try. Best of luck Patrick. Please post back with any other questions.

try to replace the coil and all the spark plugs also make sure that the plugs are gapped right. that info will be on the evaporation sticker onthe core support in the front of the truck under hood. I think it is 0.004 not 100% sure on that. I hope that helps
Sounds like maybe the distributor is off. I run into that alot after that kind of engine work. Reset the distibutor to #1 TDC. I hope that I helped you. Best wishes.
