Check to see if there is a switch near brake pedal (many domestics)
some are under the shifter housing. (most imports)

if you have a friend with the same kind of car, have them step on the brake with the ignition on and listen for the quiet clicking sound....follow it

SOURCE: car will not shift into gear

Sounds like a linkage/cable to me. Disconnect the linkage at the transmission and move the shift actuator by hand to see if there is the same things happening. Don't try to do this with the engine running unless someone is holding the brake inside the car.

SOURCE: key is stuck shiftr doesnt lock in to release it

Does your key turn all the way to where it should be when you usually take it out of the ignition? If not, then you have a bad nuetral saftey switch. If so try turn the wheel in either direction while attempting to pull out the key. I hope tis helped you out. It would be greatly appreciated if you could rate my answer, Thanks. MIKE-

Gear selector won't shift from park to reverse

Could be the brake switch or the solenoid that locks the shifter in park.
That circuit would need to be tested.

2000 Mazda MPV Starts & runs won't go out of Park Shifter handle moves won't change gears??

I had this issue in the past. All I did was to replace the brake switch. This part is located behind the brake pedal. Btw, if you this run into this issue again in the future, you can always push this switch with your finger and it's located on top of your steering wheel enclosure, this will disengage the shifter.there is a small rectangle shape cover that you need to remove first.

My 2000 dodge caravan won't reverse, how much would that cost, and what is wrong with it?

There are pressure ports on the side of the 4 speed under the solenoid pack. These are 1/16 pipe thread, with a gauge you could check each one.

From the engine towards the transfer gear cover they are:

Underdrive
Overdrive
Reverse
Lock Up Release
2nd & 4th
Low & Reverse

These ports are connected very close to the clutches, so a bad seal will show up as low pressure. in reverse, look for at least 145 psi in Reverse and the Low & Reverse ports at the same time.
If pressures are good here, you likely have a broken ring gear on the rear planet. This will fail and will still have forward gears as the ring is not used during forward movement.
Good luck, i hope this helps.

Gear shifter is broken

When you say it is broken do you mean it won't move into certain gears?

In past couple days our '04 Echo shifting lever won't go into Park or 2 or Lo gear. And we couldn't take the key out of the ignition. My husband took to center console cover off and when he loosened the bolt under the lever we were able to get it into park and get the key out. But still cannot get into the lower gears. Will probably be taking it to a transmission shop before making major decision.

If your's is an automatic trans, and it is locked in park, there is a small opening on the right/front side of the shifter, pop the top and press the white button, it releases the lever.

Good Luck!

The gear shift is locked in place and will not shift into reverse. The vehicle has a shift release button on the console to the right of the shifter. When depressed the button unlocks the shifter and the...

It has a brake-transaxle shift interlock. You should just push the brake in to shift, but if you have done that, and it still won't shift, with foot on the brake, push the shifter all the way into park. Sometimes they don't always go into park all the way. Also if you park on a hill, it puts pressure on the btsi, so you cant shift it. Have someone push the vehicle back, just enough to take the pressure off and it should shift. I had this happen to me with my Grand Am.
