Powertrain control module no communication

I have no communication from my Powertrain Control Module, anyone know what I need to do. Replace or Reprogram? Where is it located, is is a different unit from the Engine Control Unit, the Body Control Unit, and the Transmission control unit. So many computer control units....

You need a dealer or repair shop --with professional tools
& reference material, trouble charts, etc, to diagnose the issues

  • Anonymous Nov 30, 2012

Thanks, I did call a dealer and was quoted 1200 dollars to swap in a new PCM. I wanted to thoroughly understand the procedure and process. Thanks for the input!!

  • Anonymous Nov 30, 2012

First you never need a dealer to work on any vehicle Second you have no idea what if any repair is necessary until the problem is diagnosed & a solution is found What the dealer told you was pure nonsense You spoke to someone whom most likely doesn't even work on cars

SOURCE: changing out powertrain control module with identical used one

it depends on what vehicle it came off of. if it is off of the same vehicle you should be set but if it is off of a different vehicle it may not register with the ecm then you wil have to do a pcm relearn. but it should be really simple.

Do you know anything about GM class 2 serial data network .

Modules connected to the class 2 serial data circuit monitor for serial data communications during normal vehicle operation. Operating information and commands are exchanged among the modules. When a module receives a message for a critical operating parameter, the module records the identification number of the module which sent the message for State of Health monitoring (Node Alive messages). A critical operating parameter is one which, when not received, requires that the module use a default value for that parameter. Once an identification number is learned by a module, it will monitor for that module's Node Alive message. Each module on the class 2 serial data circuit which is powered and performing functions that require detection of a communications malfunction is required to send a Node Alive message every 2 seconds. When no message is detected from a learned identification number for 10 seconds, a DTC U1016
The control module ID number list below provides a method for determining which module is not communicating. A module with a class 2 serial data circuit malfunction or which loses power during the current ignition cycle will have a Loss of Communication DTC set by other modules that depend on information from that failed module. The modules that can communicate will set a DTC indicating the module that can not communicate.

Where is the vaccum modular for transmition on the mercury sable 1999 3.0 dohc

Doesn't have one . all electronically controlled . An it was a vacuum modulator valve.
Transaxle Electronic Control System Electronic System Description
Shift timing, shift feel (line pressure) and torque converter clutch control in the AX4S are controlled electronically by the powertrain control module (PCM) (12A650) and its input/output network. The transmission control is separate from the engine control strategy in the powertrain control module, although some of the input signals are shared. Some input signals come from the engine-related sensors, for example, mass air flow sensor (MAF sensor) (12B579) and engine coolant temperature sensor (ECT sensor) (12A648) to give the powertrain control module an idea of the load and climate under which the engine is operating. Some other inputs are based on driver inputs, such as accelerator pedal position which is related to the powertrain control module by the throttle position sensor (TP sensor) (9B989). Still other inputs are provided by the transaxle itself, from sensors such as the vehicle speed sensor (VSS) (9E731), transmission range (TR) sensor (controlled by the placement of the selector lever) and the transmission fluid temperature sensor. Using all of these input signals, the powertrain control module can determine when the time and conditions are right for a shift or torque converter clutch application. The powertrain control module can also determine the line pressure needed to optimize shift feel. To accomplish these functions, the powertrain control module controls five electronic solenoids - three on/off solenoids for shifting, one pulse-width modulate solenoid for torque converter clutch control and an electronic pressure control (EPC) solenoid for line pressure control.

Where is the Body Control Module located?

I'm just curious if your aware of the BCM function's on your vehicle an if you know what the gate way module is ? An do you know about serial data communication between modules ? An do you know what the power mode master is ? And do you know the BCM needs programming ?
The body control module (BCM) in this vehicle functions as a gateway or translator. The purpose of the gateway is to translate serial data messages between the GMLAN high speed buss and the GMLAN low speed buss for communication between the various modules. The gateway will interact with each network according to that network's transmission protocol.
One example of this necessary communication is the communication between the engine control module (ECM)/powertrain control module (PCM) which is high speed serial data and Theft Deterrent Module which is low speed serial data. If these modules can not exchange information, the vehicle will not start.
Communication between the BCM and a scan tool can be on the high speed GMLAN network or low speed GMLAN network. If one network is lost, the BCM can still communicate with the scan tool. A lost communication DTC typically is set in modules other than the module with a communication failure.

Code: U0140-LOST COMMUNICATION WITH BODY CONTROL MODULE What does this mean?

U0140 Lost Communication With Body Control Module

This generic "U" trouble code applies to all car makers and indicates a problem between the PCM and the body control module. This is likely the result of a problem in the data link between the two modules.

Is the U0140-LOST COMMUNICATION WITH BODY CONTROL MODULE also set?
YES: Follow the diagnostics for U0140-LOST COMMUNICATION WITH BODY CONTROL MODULE
Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. See: Verification Tests\Powertrain Verification Test
NO: Replace and program the Powertrain Control Module.
