I am trying to replace a starter on my Kawasaki 300 Prairie. I have the manual and the special tool. I have taken the ATV down to the point were the drive pulley and the recoil starter are off. I have insert the drive pulley tool and can not get the drive pulley to budge, to the point that I have bent wrenches on the recoil starter side that is holding it stationary, am I missing a step? There is no way that with a cheater bar I can't get the pulley off, I am afriad I will break it if I put any more strength in to it. Any suggestion would be helpful.

If equipped with a pull cord, will the engine turn to rule out a seized motor? If ok, possible starter motor or starter solenoid failure. You can try jumping the solenoid to see if the starter will work . If it does, you will have a solenoid problem or switch/wiring to it
most common issue is the starter is aligned properly, this can be fixed by shiming the starter ( most replacement starters come with shims, if not you should be able to get them from your parts store)
the next most likely issue is worn drive gears on the starter or fly wheel
It all depends. Normally when you buy a replacement starter there is a piece of straight wire that comes with it that helps you to "gap" the tranny's fly wheel teeth to the starter's teeth...so they mesh properly.
Are you asking because you have flywheel damage on the transmission side or are you having starter problems?
