My daughter has an '88 F250 with the 460. Recently the engine races when starting and running, never going back to idle. Check Eng light is on

  • Anonymous Oct 14, 2012

A couple friends suggested the vacuum system, as did one of the replies below and one of them worked on it. I am not sure what he did but it runs better. He thinks it is still something with the vacuum. This is the older 7.5L; 460 cu in gas.. I think it has a throttle-body fuel system. The truck is 600 miles away and I can't look at it myself.

Have them spray (lightly) starting fluid around the intake with the truck running. If there is a leak the engine will idle up even more. They may also just need to adjust the throttle linkage.

SOURCE: check engine light is on: engine idles rough

IT SOUNDS LIKE THE IAC (IDLE AIR CONTROL) MOTOR IS BAD OR GOING BAD, BUT THE QUICK SOLUTION IS GO TO ANY AUTO ZONE,OR ADVANCE AUTO PARTS STORE, AND THEY WILL CHECK IT FOR FREE,& TELL YOU WHAT SIGNAL CODE MADE THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT COME ON, I WOULD DO THAT JUST TO BE FOR SURE, BECAUSE THERE ARE A FEW OTHER THINGS THAT CAN CAUSE IT AS WELL,SUCH AS MAF SENSOR DIRTY,OXY SENSOR GETTING A BAD READING,ETC.

1990 Buick Park Ave.

clean the idler on the intake and also clean the throttle sensor, it would also be best to change the air filter and clean the maf sensor. Idler does more than just idle vehicle it controls low revs, and drop down from reves. throttle sensor tell ecu what air to add to the fuel. and the MAF tells ecu how much air is coming into the intake. also check for broken cracked vacuum lines.

94 explorer v6 starts fine 'cold' after running...won't start unless gas peddle is pumped then idle races and continues to race when idling.

The check engine light should be on if it's doing this. The codes I expect will be for the coolant temp senser and also the coolant level or real temperture is wrong (as maybe the therostae doesn't let the motor fully warm up. Lots of other engine control codes can be in the system too as it needs to be recordeed reset driven until the light comes back on then tested for codes again to se whitch one came back first and then fix the problem that that codes reports

OK. Most automotive shops will test CHECK ENG LITE for abolutely free. Once you have the code, this may be the cause of your woes. Start there and you will not be guessing.

2003 toyota avalon gets check engine light and goes when idleing

Take the car to a local Auto Parts Retailer, and have them check the fault codes on your on-board computer. Given the year of your car, it is probably an OBD-2 type computer. They can print out whatever the computer diagnostic says the problem is. I am going to guess the throttle position sensor is to blame since it sounds just like what my sister's Mazda Mommyvan was doing.

I would Look For A Vacuum Leak, Given the Fact that ALL that Work was Done in a SHORT Amount of Time, And The Brakes ARE VACUUM ASSISTED, that when Brakes are applied the ENG. Light Comes on, Seems to Me It all May be related. It does not take Much to Pop A Vacuum line OFF Accidentally
