Front of the engine block near the timing case is best guess and the usual place. You just need a flashlight and a small mirror taped to a coat hanger. No one records where engine numbers are, because few people need it. The link might work better for you because Fixya is in North America and Holden is a South Africa and Australia brand.
Haven't done one in a while but I'm sure it's behind the exhaust You'll have to either take it out in 3 pieces or A) remove the exhaust to get to it or B) undo the engine mount and lift the engine on that side to get to it easily. They're a bit tricky
the holden red motor covered a range of capacities from 149,161,173,179,186,202
one site says the number of welsh plugs in the side of the block next to the starter is a method 3 plugs = 149
5 plus (3big,2small=179,186,161 etc
149 blocks have no casting identification where as 179 have HP cast in the block
from what I can find the h indicates 149 as 179 numbers start with m
if the engine number is m--it is 179 high comp built prior to hq cars
for interesting reading go google and type in --engine numbers for holden 149 engine -- and there are many pages of information for reading
The following is possibly the finest in Oz. Just tell them what you want and they will locate a core (engine) for you, rebuild it to either factory or competition spec as you request and ship it to you. They are in QLD, mate. http://www.superformance.com.au/products/engines/holden
side of motor firewall side down near cv shaft that goes into gearbox if you look there you will see a 8mm bolt with the sensor going into the side of motor
You will find the engine number located on the engine block,
If standing in front of the car looking at windscreen it will be on the right hand side. There will be a little platform that comes off the engine block where the number will be stamped .
please understand there are a lot of items on a car that require torque settings every thing from the lug nuts to every engine bolt, and transbolt. please be more specific
