I have Ford Explorer 2010. The SUv head a frontal accident and according to the mechanic the engine is slightly upward and not properly mounted. I recently changed the Serpentine Belt and it is cutting from the outer edge. The mechanic noticed play in the cam pulley. Due to the play, the edge of the belt goes over the pulley and gets torn. Now I am driving with a belt that has its outer edge slightly cut such that it does not go over the edge of the pulley and tear again. Do I need to change the pulley due to the play? or how do I go about it? Please advise.
If the pulley has play then replace it. guarinteed. the play is allowing the belt to pull on the belt in such a way that its allowing the belt to pull foreward on it instead of into it and is causing damage. once you replace it then check every single turn point that belt does to see if its dead straight. not close enough, dead precision straight. if you put something straight like a square steel rod on the fronts of each pulley and check that over the gap that the rod pretty much touches both sides of each pully face. that will guarintee you that those pulleys are in line. if you put the rod on one pulley and the other pulley is 20mm or 3/4 of an inch out then the pulley thats out needs to be re aligned. your best true solution to this issue is fix the pulley problem then trade it in. you are going to have a lot of issues with it within the next 50 thousand now that the engines taken a whack and the transmission is out of line.
Thanks for your response. I will check the alignment today. The problem according to my mechanic is that the engine was not properly mounted due probably a dent on the chassis. And that this problem will remain. However, with the belt cut from the outer side, its doing fine. But will it affect the engine performance?
if there is a dent in the chassis theres every chance the chassis is not straight and that will be causing more wear on the drive line and tyres too. the belt being cut in itself will not affect performance untill it snaps. then your going to see the "christmas tree" effect in which your whole car dash goes nuts. i would buy and carry at least one spare belt at all times and a roadside toolkit to ensure you dont get caught out because running on a frayed belt will be pretty unpredictable as to when and how its going to go. also feel the tension on the belt so when you break it you know approximately how tight it is. and when you put the new one on make it a little more slack. it may help it last a little longer if you have not already fixed the problems beforehand.

What engine is this? if it is the 4.0L then talk to the dealer there is a recall on the camshaft drive chain hydraulic tensors, these will cause a rattle noise.

Lower left is the tensioner and above should the idler. Sometimes there is a diagram on the fan shroud or near the radiator. Without a picture I hope this makes sense.
Starting with the ac going over the top of its pulley and down to the power steering, to and under the crank shaft, going in and up and around left over the water pump to the tensioner (going under) and to the alternator over the top and then under the idler.
