Where is the tach sensor 1994 pontiac trans sport 3100

Tach reads twice normal speed. I know this car from 200k+ miles driving. Engine is running normally, tach just reads double what it should

In the distributor.

Thanks Dennis! First common sense answer I've seen. Will be re-working the distributor and replacing rotor, cap and plug wires while I'm at it. It has begun to backfire throught the carb and start hard only after sitting for a botu a week in damp/rain/humidity. I'm going to proceed as though the plug wires are cross-firing.

Its definitly a bad reading, you would know if your vehicle is overheating, you can usually smell it right away.I would say its your temperature gauge sending unit is defective, check the wires to see if they are well connected or broken. ask a backyard mechanic for assistance.

SOURCE: tach stops working and trac control light off comes on

It sounds as though your Crankshaft Position Sensor has gone out. They are pretty easy to change. You will have to remove your harmonic balancer/crank pully to get to it, as it is on the inside of the pully. Also, if you have a 3.1 engine, you have a second Crankshaft Position Sensor on the side of the engine closest to your firewall. (it is below the number 1 and 3 spark plug). It could be that one or the one behind the balancer. I would suggest replacing both of them at the same time. As for removeing the harmonic balancer, you should use a puller to do so. When reinstalling it, do not use a hammer or anything to tap it back on, as this can damage the balance and also the crankshaft. You should use a harmonic balancer installer to put it back on. Both the puller and installer can be borrowed from Autozone (with a deposit that will be returned once you return the tools).

I have the same problem.. i installed a toggle switch for the fuse so at least I can reset it while driving.. its still a pain so Im thinking my next step will be to drill a hole through the plastic and put in a small metal post to stop the tach from going past 7

has anyone taken theirs into a shop?

96 gmc k1500 speedo & tach stopped

car drives runs perfectly and transmission and headlamp?
does CEL glow key on? check engine lamp(it self tests then)
fuses first. F4 = gage fuse/ 6 fuses to make VCM run.
scan the PCM
check for 12vd top the cluster power pins.
the VCM sends speed data (serial ) to the cluster brain.
speed vss1 is digital sensor, on trans.
tach is pure VCM/PCM signal sent to cluster.
Id say F4 blow. if car drives ok, not told wow./

Tach runs too high

Engine speed is determined from crank or cam sensor. You most likely have a cluster issue.

I have a 2006 G6 with the 3.5ltr automatic trans. I have a jerking while accelerating problem. If I disconnect the battery and let the computer reset, it goes away for about 2500 miles and then comes...

Could be the throttle position sensor or Accelerator Pedal Position (APP) Sensor .You vehicle has electronic throttle control .Do you know what that is ? There are position sensors in both the throttle body an the gas pedal .

I have had the almost same problem twice. A 'thump', like the engine missed a fire and tach drops. Seems OK after restart. Electrical? Timing chain slip?

Bad crankshaft sensor on a 1994 GMC k1500 5.7L TBI Auto?

if your o2 sensor is reading too lean then you have a vacume leak spray brake cleaner on all your vacume hoses one at a time if nothing then spray it around your intake manifold gasket they are usually the culprit

1995 Maxima SE tach does not work at all. Car runs/ drives fine but no tach. 2 check engine light codes one for knock sensor(which I think is actually the o2 sensor from what I have read) the other from...

I am not familiar with this particular car, but the tach problem may be due to the speed sensor. I'd find the speed sensor and have it checked or replaced. My transmission has an input and output sensor. The input sensor feeds the tach (and the computer), the output sensor feeds the speedometer (and the computer). Also the knock sensor is critical to keep the car running efficiently without damaging itself.

Engine will rev. No drop in speed, no increase in

likely what you are seeing is the first signs of slipping. If permitted to continue, likely it will get worse and you will then lose a bit of speed when it happens. In warmer weather the trans runs a bit hotter and will react to that. If you cannot hear the revs increasing but the tach says they are, it's also possible that for some reason the tach isn't reading correctly. Any good tech should be able to tell the difference. Problem I have is that I'm here and can't drive it to give you a "definite" on either. The only way to verify this yourself would be to attach an external tach to the engine and compare the rpms of the one in your dash to that one.

1994 f-350 7.3 turbo diesel.tach reading 0 rpm's at idle speed.

yea the 93 to 95 trucks never had a tach that works very long
and first the Tach does not make the od light blink or ck engine lgt
the crank trigger does this little thing is located right in middle front of engine between the vac pump and pwr steering pmp looks like a brass bolt with wires comming out of the back of it costs about 30 bucks (don't forget the locktite blue)
now that should fix the od lights and the ck engine but it may not fix the tach thats done in the tach driver module on back of tach in dash
you can replace this but my vote it's too expensive I did mine just fine with a after market one(50 bucks), bolted it right in front of old one, it hooks up super easy gets it's signal off the alternator stator

im sort of suprized it starts ok with a bad crank trig (eec needs to see +50 rpm to start fuel flow to injectors )

any good shop with a eec scanner can see this in just seconds

I have a 98 grand prix 3.8L and sometimes it's hard to start. then sometimes going down the road the tach goes to zero and the speedometer starts swinging while the car is trying to stall.

If the vehicle cranks normally when not starting check the tach see if it is reading any engine speed. Sounds like the crank sensor is going bad very common fault on the 3800 series 1 & 2 engines. You must remove the harmonic balancer to replace the sensor.
