Have you checked that the transmission fluid level is correct when the engine his running at idle. Low fluid level is the cause of mant auto transmission faults.

Other than that it's either the torx convertor or the box itself. Changing the fluid and examine for metal bits but do not overfill or you will blow the torx seal and loose all the fluid.

My ford ranger 4x4 5 spd. has started howling when I'm going down the road and it only stops when I either push in on the clutch or put it in neutral.

What speeds, does it make more noise in 4 wheel drive or the same. There are several possibilities, need more information. Does it howl in all the gears or in 5th gear only.

We just replaced our univeral joints and both front bearings and rotors believing that this was the cause of the howling and grinding sound, plus we changed our tires to eliminate that as a cause of the...

you didn't say what kind of truck it was but that sounds like it could be a carrier bearing or a bad drive shaft, if the drive shaft has ANY dents or dings it won't be balanced.

2003 Chevy Blazer 4x4 making howling noise in front end.

as stated above, check the transfer case fluid level, also check the fluid in the front and rear differentials, make sure it is full and clean. if the howling still exists it can also be caused by hub bearings, or differential bearings.
