1991 Pontiac Firebird Starting Problems

When I try to start the car it will crank for quite a while then finally start, once started it will run perfect. The problem comes once I shut it down and try to restart it. When its warm it will just crank and won't start back up. We have checked the spark plugs and wires and also the distributor and they are all fine. I was thinking the fuel pump was going out or somewhere along the fuel line it was getting to warm and vapor locking. Help me please!!!

Probably lost spark or gas when it gets warmed and wont restart.

Do these two tests when it acts up: test the fuel pressure with a fuel pressure gauge. I believe you can rent them at Autozone. You don't have to start the engine, just hook up the gauge, turn the key to on, and check the pressure. It must be within Pontiac (GM)specs, which for multiport injection is pretty high around 40-45 psi. Parts stores can look it up for you, I believe.
Also pull a spark plug wire and check for spark with engine cranking over. The easiest and safest way to do this is to buy an inexpensive spark tester. The plug wire fits over the tester, then you clip the tester to a ground, like a metal bolt or bracket on the engine. Verify there is a strong blue spark- if not the ignition system must be diagnosed. Cam or Crank sensors are often the problem-the engine computer uses them (especially the crank sensor) to determine spark timing. If sensor malfunctions, you will get no spark.
You should also check for trouble codes. Post back if you don't know how. It just takes a short jumper wire or paper clip to have the codes flashed out by the check engine light.

Hi,

That code is for an IAC. Without a scan tool or something to manually drive it, you won't be able to confirm the problem is the IAC itself. Your best hope is to just take a shot and change it. See what you have after that.

Let me know,once done.

Hope i helped you.

Thanks for using ' Fixya ' and have a nice day!!

Sounds like something is getting power only in the start position.
If it shuts off like you are loosing fuel pressure, I would check the fuel pump relay for power and a ground signal from the computer. The computer grounds the relay for 3 seconds while cranking, then only if it sees oil pressure to know the engine is running. There may be a faulty relay that is affecting the ignition system too.

1991 firebird turns over slow, but always starts.

If the battery is in good condition, good connections and passes a load test, the starter may be bad. But be sure the connections and the grounds are good.

No start on 3.4 engine

If your car has spark and runs on starting fluid you have a fuel problem not a cam sensor. 41 lbs of fuel pressure is not enough. Try pinching off the return fuel line and check the pressure. Let me know what you find.
