You can use a wire hanger with a hook bent onto the end fairly easily if you slide it down the window and try to feel around to hook onto the lock mechanism. It may take a bit of patience, but I got into my 2000 with not too much trouble. Then do what I did immediately afterwards - get another key cut to keep in your wallet...

Get a can of "PB Blaster" or other penetrant oil and lube the lock (latch mechanism's' on all doors. You can spray them down really good and open the doors then slaming them firm, repeat.
Likely this is in the drivers door LOCK assy part# 3B1837015AT
and is retailed at $149.80 plus tax ...this has a electric switch inside it and is not serviced seperately. I dont recommend you trying to install this on your own unless your really mechanically inclined, its a real pain! It does pay .4 tenths of one hour to install plus removal on the trim panel and other hardware as .7 for a total of 1.1hours labor @ whatever rate your local dealer charges... does this light ajar show all 4 doors of just one, I cant recall....cause its the door lock on whatever door if it shows on the red light icon.

It sounds like the the linkage, actuator (power locks), or the mechanism has broken or become dislodged.
On the inside trim, you can remove screws that are by the door handle,
arm rest, under door and side of door and then gently pull back on the
panel as there will also be retaining clips attached and you don't want
to break them. You'll need to lift the door panel upwards in order to
get it off the window ledge. Then you'll need to manipulate the panel
and disconnect the door handle linkage from the door handle and
disconnect the wiring for your controls. Pull back the weather seal and you should see everything and hopefully see the cause.
Instructions
Straighten out the metal coat hanger and bend one end of the hanger into
a hook shape. Make the hook about one inch.
Place the end of the metal coat hanger with the hook on it between the
window and the frame. Place the hanger 1/2 an inch behind the door handle
toward the the edge of the door closest to the rear door.
Push the hanger down about two feet into the door frame. Pull up on the
hanger until you feel the hook catch onto the metal arm inside the door frame
that controls the lock. You may have to try a few times before the hook catches
the metal arm.
Pull up on the hanger once the hook has connected to the metal arm until
the door lock unlocks. The lock handle on the inside of the car will move once
you have connected the hook to the metal arm that controls the door lock.
