Cooling fan not working consistently on 1987 Ford Tempo

I just got a radiator put into today and the shop said the cooling fan wasn't coming on. I got it half way home & stopped, the fan did come on - but briefly. The rest of my trip home the car wants to die from (my guess) being hot. I don't have a temp gauge, unfortunately. I live less than a mile from the shop. I did replace the thermostat & valve cover gaskets less than a year ago and got the warning about the radiator. The shop said it could be relay, sensor or fan. Could it still be the fan if it works off/on? How do I test to see if it's the relay or sensor, if it's not the fan itself. Thanks!!!

The water pump was replaced by the dealership maybe within a year of me getting the car - I've had it 1 1/2yrs. I know that's not to say it still may have crapped out but i don't think that's the case.

I have a coolant temp sensor on order from NAPA. I'm putting in a new thermostat today. I will also pull all the plugs today and hope i don't see anything funky. I will post an update later.

I find it really annoying that this car was originally equipped with an airbag & a/c but no temp gauge. thanks for all the suggestions!!

To: William - The shop did exactly what I asked them to do. I did not want them to do anything beyond what I asked them for. They were extremely helpful & accommodating. I do not intend to dump tons of money into this vehicle and wanted to attempt to find a solution on my own. Although, I can appreciate your concern as a consumer, I don't feel the shop did anything wrong. Thanks for your suggestion.

I'm fully aware of the consequences as result from an overheating engine. Thanks once again for your concern.

I replaced thermostat, radiator cap and coolant fan switch and it seemed to solve the problem, Thanks to everyone for your suggestions.

You can easily install an aftermarket temp guage. Autometer makes some nice ones.
Also, find another shop. they should have told you what was wrong and advised you not to drive the car until it was repaired. To let you go in a car in that condition is irresponsible and maybe even unethical.

Okay, so it's your bad for driving a car they told you was not functioning properly. Be careful...overheat it enough times and you'll ruin the engine or blow a head gasket.

I hope they at least told you that.....

SOURCE: car running hot

If the fan is working properly then you might want to check the INTAKE MANIFOLD for leaks or make sure the HEAD GASKET isn't blown. If the fan is NOT working properly, replace the fan and the pigtail that connects to it

Radiator Fan won't work

Check the coolant sensor for operation as that is what tells the CPU to let power to the fan relay to put it on. Check both fuses in the circuit

Location of radiator fan relay 1992 ford tempo gl

The radiator cooling fan relay in ford Tempo gl has been integrated into the CCRM (Constant Control Relay Module) this is the black box fixed to the left strut tower with the big cable harness on it.

This relay box is commanded by the PCM (Powertrain Control Module) it´s linked to every sensor in the car. (It's located behind the fuse panel next to the steering column.

The PCM supervises various conditions, including the signal that the ECT (Engine Coolant Temperature) sensor sends and power up the Fan Relay into CCRM to activate the Cooling Fan.

COOLING FAN WONT KICK ON. DID A JUMP TO THE BATTERY FROM THE OUTSIDE PLUG AND FAN KICKED ON. BOUGHT A NEW RELAY FOR UNDER THE DASH BUT FAN STILL WONT COME ON. IS THERE A FUSE TO?

The cooling fan relay is located in the engine compartment just behing the left headlamp...not under the dash. There are cooling fan test connectors built into the wiring harness near the left strut tower. The cooling fan relay is controlled by the cooling fan temperature switch located on the rear of the engine. There are 3 temperature sending units on your car if it is equipped with a temperature gauge. If not, there are 2 sending units, One is for the computer and the other is for the fan relay.

The one for the cooling fan will have 2 wires, one Tan and Orange and the other Brown and White.

The cooling fans and cooling fan relay get their power from fusible links built into the wiring harness near the starter relay.
