You have to test them, either should work fine (as in use either pair) if that doesn't work connect one pair at a time and listen for the difference, one pair might be for factory midrange and other for tweeter.. there are two different wiring configurations...

BE MORE SPECIFIC!
Why do you need to trace them? Is it a stock amp? If you know where the amp is....then tracing the wiring is a cinch....
The amp has to be powered, so there's most likely a power wire from your battery. If it's a stock amp, it's powered from behind your cd player. And be more specific, what speakers? There's like what, six?
They all go to one spot man, right behind the cd player.
What's spiking? The sound? As in it's loud, quiet, loud, quiet, loud? You might have a bad ground somewhere, so check grounds. Those are easy to find, behind the deck the ground is black. If it's an aftermarket amp, then the ground is going to be close by to it. It's most likely screwed to the steel part of your car.
It could be your deck to, it might have just got randomly defective. You do have a 96 after all.
If it's an aftermarket cd player...check your wiring harness. You have to cut the wires from the car to tie them into the harness for your cd player, so jiggle those around to see if you can hear a difference.
