I purchased a 1999 dodge Dakote 4X4 and the speedometer does not work but everything on the cluster works

The speed cluster work from the ABS speed sensors that have separate computer it is on engine compartment near battery and brake booster. This computer work independent and only get 12v and can bus send all the info by a can bus 2 wires that run to dodge ECM same wires run to cluster. I make a diesel swap speed work ok but not my RPM any ideas

if your odometer is working and your speedometer not working they both get there signal form the one unit [transducer] so i would say that you have a internal fault in your instrument cluster [speedometer] you may be able to have it repaired if not you will have to replace the instrument cluster.regards agwbk

The bulb for the 4x4 light could be burnt out pull it out and check to see if the bulb is black.

its bad plug terminals that the speedometer cluster plugs into. common neon

it may be the vsp or (vehicle speed sensor) it should have triggered the check eng light. If no check eng. light check the sensor connection. this is located on top side of tranny. let me know what you find.

check wirng from VSS to cluster.

sounds like a faulty gauge cluster or a loose connector on the back of the gauge cluster

Sounds as though you've lost a grounding point to the firewall. Check the flat uncoated braided wire that runs from the engine block to the firewall and check it for integrity.Shoud be tight and clean. Secondly if you can get your hand up behind the instument cluster try to push the main harness group in with your fingers.

try checking your fuses under your dash panel to see if one of them is boken/blown

Removed cluster from dashboard and unplugged & turned the whole cluster clockwise very slowly and needle started moving from 150 mph back down to 0 mph when rotation was completely done. Kept cluster upright while re-installing and plugged back in the plugs on back and everything was fine. Called local Dodge dealer and told me would take 30-45 minutes to reset and would cost approximately $70 to fix. Took about 8-10 minutes of my time and saved myself $70. This may not work for everyone but this was my amazing quick fix thanks to GOD for giving me this thought to try this.
