Where is the fuel sensor?

My escort pony (1988) is jerking and bucking. It runs better after using choke and fuel injection cleaners. I was told it needs a new fuel sensor or solenoid? Where is these at?

Jennifer, Go back to the mechanic and have him write down on paper the proper name for the device which is defective. I need to know the proper name, so that I can give you the correct location. Also give me the engine size.

I asked for the clarification on the "proper name for the device". My brother says it is the throttle sensor. So does this help chaskuss?

Jennifer,
Yes, that helps. The THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR is a black plastic device [abbreviation is TPS] mounted on the throttle body. It is held on with 2 screws and has a 3 wire electrical harness plugged into it. The easy way to locate the throttle body [in case your brother does not know] is to follow the black rubber tube which goes from the air cleaner to the engine. the aluminum device that rubber tube connects to, is the throttle body. There is another sensor called the IAC [Idle Air Control Valve] which also is attached to the throttle body. The IAC usually has 4 wires, rather than 3, going to it. That is the easiest way to differentiate it from the TPS [Throttle Position Sensor]
The TPS can be changed by unplugging the wiring connector and removing the two mounting screws. To further complicate the issue, Ford used two styles of TPS. One style has slotted holes for the two mounting screws. The slots are designed to allow the sensor to be adjusted. The second TPS design does not have slotted mounting holes in it. It can only go on one way, and is NOT adjustable. If your car has the style with slotted holes, you will need to use a computer scanner to read the voltage of that sensor [with the key on, engine off and gas pedal [aka throttle pedal] at idle. If the voltage for the TPS is between 0.9 and 1.1 volts, everything is OK. If the voltage is not within that tolerance, you must loosen the mounting screws and move the sensor in the slotted holes, to get the proper voltage reading.
If this is all to confusing for your brother, you will need to take the car to a professional mechanic.
Does your brother know if your engine has throttle body fuel injection or four individual fuel injectors? I ask, because that also makes a difference.

My brother is in North Carolina while mom and I are in Michigan. So since I know how to explain the problem to him, he can give me what's wrong. He only moved a few months ago and is familiar with the car.

!.The car will jerk when you accelerate, especially if your fuel filter has been blocked due to accumulated waste in it. but you would lack power always.
cuz it's fuel injected very well might be a bad throttle position sensor. TPS for short.
one or the other is my belief. will take awhile for the tps to throw a hard code. so i'm betting on that. ck rockauto for price of the unit i don't think it'll break the bank.
Hope this helps.

Jerking/jumping while driving

An automobile's ignition system may work fine while idling but fail during acceleration. Problem areas to be inspected include the spark plugs, spark plug wires and vacuum hoses. Car owners should look for spark plugs that are covered in oil or sediment or damaged, spark plug wires that have damaged insulation, and vacuum hoses that are unplugged or leaking. Fuel Problems
  • The use of a fuel additive that contains both fuel injector cleaner and water remover can fix minor problems due to water in the gas and fuel injector clogs. A fuel pressure gauge can also be used to test the injection system to assure proper pressure.
While most acceleration problems are likely caused by problems with the plugs, wires or fuel, a variety of sensors and other components can cause similar problems. a bad tps ( throttle position sensor ) will cause causes transmission shift issues, bucking, jerking, idle surging, engine cutoff, hesitation on takeoff, and surging while going down highway.
good-day ! check and or clean maf sensor if need be. you can by the maf sensor cleaner at most auto parts stores.

Clean the Air Idle control (IAC) valve in the throttle body, MAF sensor, and EGR valve. Also check or replace the fuel pressure regulator at the fuel injector rails, make sure all the vacuum hoses are good and replace any damaged hoses. NO check engine light is a good thing but here is a link for you to check the car for any DTC codes. Good luck and keep up the good work and keep the car running.

Check throttle position sensor (TPS) is a sensor used to monitor the position of the throttle. The sensor is usually a potentiometer, and therefore provides a variable resistance dependent upon the position of the valve. The sensor signal is used by the engine control unit (ECU) as an input to its control system. The ignition timing and fuel injection timing (and potentially other parameters) are altered depending upon the position of the throttle, and also depending on the rate of change of that position. For example, in fuel injected engines, in order to avoid stalling, extra fuel may be injected if the throttle is opened rapidly (mimicking the accelerator pump of carburetor systems). the cost about 50-75 bucks.

Once car warms up it dies when you press on gas. Then it will not start at all.It turns over but will not start. I am getting fuel and spark.........?

On cars with a carb, you could point to lean fuel mixture. Runs rich enough when it's cold, because the choke makes the fuel mix richer. When it's warm. you no longer have that"rich" mix from the choke and then it's too lean to keep running. Could be a dirty jet, dirt in the carb, Dirt in the fuel. the list goes on. Needs rebuilt or blown out with carb cleaner spray works sometimes. Dissasemble and clean out with compressed air.
With fuel injection, Throttle bodies, it could be a dirty throttle body, injector, etc, Port injection, could be a sensor or some thing controling fuel, a bad couple of injectors, really not sure. Or a sensor of some sort. If you could get it to Auto zone they will scan it for free and tell you what it needs. Hard to put a finger on it with out seeing it. Have you tryed a good fuel cleaner like lucas? Do you run the tank below a quater tank? This will cause troubles. Best of luck, Those Quad four's are a great motor. lbreen

Jerking while driving

If you park your vehicle for a long time, you run the risk of having contaminated fuel in the tank. This happened to a car my wife purchased, and it was the last thing I found. It proved to be the problem. What you need to do is remove the fuel from the tank and then have the tank flushed. Fill it with fresh fuel and replace the fuel filter.
