There is usually a safety interlock requiring the footbrake to be applied before shifting out of park. The interlock won't work without electricity. Recharge the battery or just replace though I guess jump leads would supply enough power for the interlock to work.
If your battery is dead, the key will stay in. Try giving it a jump. Also check to see if the steering wheel is locked. If it is, try turning the steering wheel somewhat vigerously whilst trying to remove the key. Short of that, it's a common problem with those year GM vehicles. Their ignition switches suck badly
the battery is in the driver side in front of the wheel. it is directly below in the engine bay. need to remove the wheel and the wheel cover to have access on it.
Hi Ellen. The battery on your stratus is located in the left (driver side) fender in front of the wheel. There are battery terminals under the hood though, which you can use to jump start or charge the battery from. If the battery needs to be replaced, the easiest way would be to remove the left front wheel and then an access panel in front of the wheel. The wheel does not need to be removed, according to the manual, but it does make things easier. This is a 30 minute procedure to remove the battery. All this info and more is available in the cars owners manual. If you don't have the manual, you can download it for free at this site: there is a diagram of the under hood terminals. http://www.dodge.com/en/owners/manuals/index.html
the first thing you need to do is remove the battery cables from the terminals. The battery is under other equipment such as the air filter and other components.
You have to remove the drivers' side wheel (rediculous I know) and then remove the square panel on the wheel well liner (on the front side of the wheel well...towards the headlights) There is a small square panel that is too be removed. the battery slides out directly in to the wheel well.
They say you do not have to remove the wheel, but I tried and had no luck so I just went ahead and removed the wheel, it gives you more room to work with when pulling the old battery out and putting a new one in.
If you haven't already located the battery, it is in the fenderwell, in front of the drivers side front wheel. There are a few retainers on a plastic shield in that area, remove those. Then disconnect the negative (black) cable first, and then the positive. You will also notice that there is a hold down bracket for the battery. Remove the bracket and the battery will slide out.
NOTE: It is easiest to remove the battery with the left front wheel off. Make sure to have the car on jack stands before you remove the wheel.
