The housing and glass of the driver's side mirror of my 1998 VW bettle are broken. I got a used replacement part I tried to install today but after removing the three visible screws from underneath the mirror, it looks like there's one more screw somewhere I can't access. Therefore, the old mirror won't come off. Any advice? Thanks. Lourdes
If the metal pivot arm is not broken you can just replace the glass and plastic housing. To remove the glass you tilt the glass down towards the floor and use a wide plastic or wood bladed object to prise from behind, the glass should pop off from its clips. Remember to catch it if its not damaged. To remove the housing once the glass is out you need to look underneath the mirror unit, there you will find a small plastic bung, gently prise it out and then use a long small flat bladed screwdriver straight up inside the hole and lever towards the front of the car whilst lifting straight up on the plastic housing, this should then lift off. To replace just slot the new housing on and click into place then fit the glass back, remember to connect the wires first if it is a heated glass.
If the metal pivot arm is broken then you will find the remaining screws behind the plastic trim inside the vehicle.

but I need the code to unlock stereo from safe mode (had to replace battery)
Can you help or do I need to contact a VW dealership????
I assume you have this unlocked by now, but here's an answer for someone else for the future :-)
if you have the original radio that come with the car, look in the wheel well in the trunk, where the spare tire goes. (yep, you'll need to stand on your head). there is a sticker that will have the 4-digit code on it.
enter that into the radio.
I can't remember off the top of my head which one it is, but either the >> Scan or the am/fm button will be the "enter key"

I have a 2000 Volkswagen Beetle that sometimes will not start due to ( I have been told by the Volswagen repair shop) the anti-theft system. It will only do this occasionally. Any suggestions as they could not fix the car.
you need to check the drivers door lock unit. this is a more common problem where the switch fails and the anti-theft system doesn't get disarmed by the door unlocking

I just broke the latch on the outside of the car that you pull to open up the hood on my 03 VW Passat. How do I get my hood open at this point?
use a long flat tip screw driver and a small hammer. have someone pull up on the hood after you pop it from the inside, then while they are holding the hood up use the screw driver and shove the hook that is above the latch bar. when you hit it you will be hitting it to the right

i have a 1998 vw beetle 5 speed manual gasoline. it runs fine, but the check engine light gives 2 codes. p0411 and p1128. i think the gas mileage may be a little low. other than that, its good to go. any ideas on what to fix or replace?
P0411 Secondary Air Injection System Incorrect Flow Detected
The 4mm inside diameter vaccuum hose gets pinched between the lower intake manifold and the secondary air pump housing, flattening it over time.
Here's a link to the steps to fix yourself if you are mechanically inclined...
http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=1995162
P1128 Long Term Fuel Trim Is Too Lean
It is very likely this code is coming up because of the vacuum hose as well.

Where is idile valve air control sensor located on the 1998 beetle
Hi there,
Well please follow the below link to check out the position of idle valve -
http://www.freeengineinfo.com/idle-air-control-valve-replacement.htm
The Idle Air Control (IAC) valve controls the engine idle speed and dashpot functions. The valve is located on the side of the throttle body. This valve allows the necessary amount of air, as determined by the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) and controlled by a duty cycle signal, to bypass the throttle plate in order to maintain the proper idle speed.
TESTING
Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.
Disengage the wiring harness connector from the IAC valve .
Using an ohmmeter, measure the resistance between the terminals of the valve.
NOTE: Due to the diode in the solenoid, place the ohmmeter positive lead on the VPWR terminal and the negative lead on the ISC terminal.
If the resistance is not 7–13 ohms, replace the IAC valve.
The following symptoms can be caused by a faulty IAC due to loose connections, bad grounds, high resistance in the circuit, or opens in the circuit.
REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
Disconnect the negative battery cable.
Disengage the wiring harness connector from the IAC valve.
Remove the two retaining screws, then remove the IAC valve and discard the old gasket.
To install:
Clean the IAC valve mounting surface on the throttle body of old gasket material.
Using a new gasket, position the IAC valve on the throttle body. Install and tighten the retaining screws to 71–106 inch lbs. (8–12 Nm).
Attach the wiring harness connector to the IAC valve.
Connect the negative battery cable.
Good Luck!!
Thanks

i have a 1998 vw beetle and when i put it in reverse the car goes forward like its in first gear... the reverse lights come on and it goes into reverse (gear) but instead up going backward it goes forward
I have a 1998 and I just confronted the same problem. It seems to take like 1 gear in reserve and like 2 gear in 1 gear. Any thoughts? I don't really it should be the transmission since it still works going forward in 2 different gears. Thanks.

1998 volkswagen beetle radio code is safe what does this mean
IMPORTANT NOTE:
You must have the security anti-theft code for your Volkswagen radio from the car manufacturer, or from a Volkswagen dealer!
You can find the radio code at: http://www.radio-code.co.uk/
The sequence of programming for a 1998 VW Beetle radio is:
1. Push simultaneous "SCAN" and "RDS" keys until on the screen will appear "1000" displayed.
2. Release keys. No more push on "SCAN" and "RDS" keys because otherwise number "1000" will be considered as first safe code attempt.
For example: we have the security code "5079". Then:
3. By the no.# 1 key you will set up the first safe code digit. Push 5 times on the no.# 1 button. The "5" number will be setted.
4. By the no.# 2 key you will set up the second safe code digit. Push 10 times on the no.# 2 button. The "0" number will be setted.
5. By the no.# 3 key you will set up the third safe code digit. Push 7 times on the no.# 3 button. The "7" number will be setted.
6. By the no.# 4 key you will set up the four-th safe code digit. Push 9 times on the no.# 4 button. The "9" number will be setted.
7. Then push again simultaneous "SCAN" and "RDS" keys for confirm this safe code. On the screen will be displayed "SAFE" notice. Release keys! For few seconds a radio frequence will be displayed. The radio is now ready for use!

I need a fuse diagram (for both fuse blocks) for the car. Unfortunately, the fuse panel is missing (so no diagram) and I do not have an owners manual.
This might be what you need. http://www.randy2006.com/2012/1998-volkswagen-beetle-owners-manual-pdf/
