Hi there. I have a

I'm at a bit of a disadvantage because I haven't seen this brand before, but I deduced from the manufacturer's description and the problem you are having that the track signals do not actually run through the faders, but the fader position is digitally encoded and the number applied to the track data. The lockup at 100 and the random fader position value changes suggest there is a problem with the fader position reading function (probably an analog--to-digital converter). I assume you have already updated to HD16 System Version 1.12 and installed the latest key mapping file for your mixing software. I mention this because perhaps there is an unannounced bug in the older version(s) that causes unexpected fader action on certain operator inputs; there was one such announced glitch in track status indication just for Tracks 1 and 4.

Regarding disassembly:
Can you remove the bottom case with the circuit still attached to the top panel (this is the most common arrangement for mixers)? You may have to remove the hardware from the backside connectors to do so. If this doesn't work, can you separate the pieces far enough to look inside along the right? You may find that the encoder and shuttle assembly are on a separate board that remains attached to the top panel at the first step of disassembly, and there would be cabling from that board to the rest of the unit. It is also possible that these knobs are unlatched from the inside if they don't simply pull off, or they may simply go through big holes in the front panel. I find it hard to believe that anyone would be so mean as to make these one-way, one-time snap-on knobs; the warranty service department techs would complain.

Unless you can use an oscilloscope and multimeter, I'm not sure what you could do inside the mixer other than make sure the cable connectors are clean and properly seated on the fader assembly. You could check the power supply for failing capacitors - perhaps the fader is less forgiving of poor voltage regulation than the rest of the circuit. But then, that is best done with an oscilloscope; failing electrolytic capacitors do not always show externally visible signs of their demise.

No display or indicator lighting. Have fresh

if it at least open to lit the display ..than you should look for a reset button ...that may be hidden in a hole and need to be pressed with a sharp object ..if it has one ...power it up ..and reset it ..after that it should work , if it doesn't have a reset button ...remove any power source on it ..and leave it be for a few hours...and see if ti is reset after that ..In the last case ..if you seam to have a power response at least ...download and reinstall the firmware form the support site..
But ..from what I sow you described..it seam more like a power issue ..and it doesn't receive power ...and in this case you have to open it up ..and check the connections ..or the motherboard is fried..

Zoom h4 Vista recording

Don't know if this is the problem in your case ... but here's what I did:
Note: I have Win XP
Previous to attempting connection between laptop and H4 as an audio interface I updated the H4 firmware to ver2.4 and connected to the laptop successfully as a card reader. From the laptop, I could see files I knew were on the H4 card.
... but when I tried connecting in Audio I/O mode, my laptop didn't know what to make of the H4. There was a USB mass storage driver associated with the H4 - I could see this from the "Device Manager". I "uninstalled" the USB driver associated to that "unknown" USB device. I terminated the audio connection on the H4, then reconnected. !!! It was recognized as "USB Audio Device" in the "Sound, video and game controllers" section of the "Device Manager". Before, it was listed under "Universal Serial Bus controllers" as a generic USB device with a yellow warning highlight indicating there was something wrong.
Hope this helps!

Distortion with Zoom H4 as Audio I/O to computer

try using the power pack instead of batteries. Be sure to remove the batteries before using power pack, you can wreck the machine if you do not remove batteries. NEVER use the H4 on power pack while there is batteries inside.
