Yamaha Electrical Supplies - Answered Questions & Fixed Issues

Does your generator is single phase generator set or three phase four wire generator? Why your generator set is 110V at full load, it should be 220V or 240V to generator electricity. If it is used for industrial equipment, it should be 380V, 400V, 440V, etc.

The generator does not operate in accordance with the specified technical conditions, such as too high stator voltage, iron loss increases; if the load current is too large, the copper loss of the stator winding increases; if the frequency is too low, the cooling fan speed becomes slow, affecting the heat dissipation of generator; the power factor is too low, so that the rotor excitation current increases, resulting in the rotor heating. Check whether the indication of monitoring instrument is normal. If it is abnormal, necessary adjustment and treatment must be carried out to operate the generator in accordance with the specified technical conditions.

if the generator has been sitting for a while you might have to excite the magnets to start producing power. plug in a reversible drill and with the generator running turn the drill in the reverse direction by hand while holding the trigger in the forward position.

Here is some reasons for reference:
1.After the diesel generator is stopped, the residual magnetism is often lost, because the material used for the magnetic pole of the exciter is close to the soft steel, and the residual magnetism is small. After the shutdown, when there is no current in the excitation winding, the magnetic field will disappear.
2.The magnetic pole of the diesel generator loses its magnetic properties.
3.Damage of excitation circuit components or circuit breakage, short circuit or grounding phenomena.
4.The exciter brush is not in good contact with the commutator and pressure of brush holder is insufficient.
5.Excitation winding wiring error, opposite polarity.
6.Stator winding and rotor winding of generator set open circuit.
7.Poor contact between diesel generator brush and slip ring, or insufficient brush pressure.
8.Diesel generator lead wire wiring is loose or switch contact is poor.
9.The fuse box is fused.
10.The "auto-manual-de-excitation" switch on the control panel is in the de-excitation position (automatic generator set has "auto-manual-de-excitation" switch).
11.The voltmeter is damaged.
12.Rotary rectifier module is damaged.

Start by replacing fuel. Completely drain the tank and carburetor fuel bowl. Do not use what fuel you may have, get 2 gallons of fresh fuel from gas station. If problem clears then likely water in fuel.

If still backfires with fresh fuel then likely an ignition issue. Failing ignition module or possibly a sheared flywheel key. Try reducing spark plug gap to .025" .

The design of principles of diesel generator parallel system

The design of parallel optimization system for diesel generator sets adopts a parallel machine scheme with load distribution function for parallel machine monitoring system and parallel cabinet, it can be better to apply to large-scale parallel systems. We can accord to different requirement, for example, if apply to start-up of large power generator, the system can provide pre-start to meet the requirements. Aiming at the strong, weak and electromagnetic interference problems in parallel system, the design should use software filter and hardware filter to solve the problem. Adopt CAN bus methods to compare the digital quantities to achieve more effective active power allocation, this can avoid adverse effect to active power distribution by voltage loss in voltage load distributor.Aiming at different generator types to design and ensure reactive power distribution form. Aiming at the generator that uses AVR pressure regulating template, its reactive power distribution adopts software programming to increase voltage feedback to offset the adverse effects of temperature drift. In order to avoid impact on generator. In the parallel system, a zero power conversion design scheme is provided, that is, automatic synchronization between genset, zero power working for newly added genset, and then load transfer and average distribution are carried out smoothly according to the setting.

There are several types of overload to consider:
A. Catastrophic: something has gone very wrong. There may be a phase to phase short or two shorts to ground. This assumes you have an ungrounded system. With luck the main circuit breaker will open without destroying itself;
B. Steady state over current: The load on the generator is greater than the rating on the circuit breaker. Time to parallel in another generatoror shed load;
C. Transient over current: Suppose you were running two generators in parallel and one failed. The remaining machine may experience an over current condition that causes the breaker to trip. You can also have transient breaker trips upon activation of a large motor e.g., fire pump or bow thruster;
D.Thermal: There is a big difference in sea water temperature as you travel the world. It is possible to have an overload caused by the diesel engine's inability to shed heat in the tropics. Continued operation could damage the diesel engine. Again, parallel in another generator or shed load.

As you describe the problem, the reason is unstable load handling.
This means that the fuel or air is not enough.

When begin to be unsteady:
  1. If smoke comes out of muffler - the input air is not sufficient. Try to clean or change air filter (cleaner).
  2. If no smoke, the fuel is not enough. The reason may be the mechanical governor, or the fuel supply to it, fuel filter/strainer etc.

Most likely, the carburetor needs cleaning.
There are two main jets powering your Yamaha, the pilot, or sometimes called the idle jet, and the main jet. If the pilot jet is clogged, the main jet will take on the load, and the governor will modulate the carburetor to keep it running, causing the surging problem. Likely, the problem is less, or even nonexistent if the choke is on, or the generator is under load.
Search the web for help on cleaning this pilot/idle jet.

Yes, try to bypass oil sensor to evaluate problem. Defective oil sensors cause a lot of problems.

Is it overloaded? That's the most common reason!

Make sure there are no vacuum leaks on the engine manifold side of carburetor. There are 3 o 4 pieces on the engine side so inspect well.

If no leaks on engine manifold side then likely there's a blockage somewhere in the carburetor high speed circuit. Most economical solution is chinese knock-off for ~$20 US delivered.

If you can't find a cheap replacement then you'll need to do a deeper clean of carburetor by removing welch plugs and submerge in carb cleaner. You will need new welch plugs (kit) and likely kit will cost more than a knock-off carb.

Before tearing down carb, you could try Seafoam fuel treatment... probably less the 50:50 chance it will clear.

If your generator cannot run normally, please follow the guide in this article to solve your problem.
If diesel generators fail to start, you can analyze the causes from fuel system failure, electric starting system failure, insufficient compression pressure in the cylinder and the low ambient temperature and other factors.
