I have 4 UNO Villaware
This is straight from the manual. Look at page 3.
Before baking the first waffles of the day, use a pastry brush to lightly coat
the top and bottom waffle grids with vegetable oil or melted shortening.
You'll find that spray shortenings work well for this purpose. Repeat this only
at the start of each day you bake waffles.
Here is the manual.

I have a model 8550.
It won't bake anymore because its heater, thermostat, loose wiring either of that three I mentioned will cause no heat, no bake symptoms. Have it check if you can or find a service technician.
That answer your problem.

For a 900 watt 2-square
There is no adjustment, all you can do is open it up earlier and avoid browning further.
You should be able to just open the waffle iron sooner... and take the waffle out before it gets too done for your liking.
Thanks, let me know if you have any questions or concerns, just reply to my answer here and I will be right back with you.

How long to cook and at what temp
There is not exactly a specific time. It all depends on how you want your waffles. I have been making waffles for years. set the temp to about 3 quarters as high as it will go. A lot of it just takes practice. Put the batter in and give it a few minutes. Check on it very quickly. It will most likely not be golden-brown yet so give it as much time as you think it needs. be careful not to open it more than 2 times or they will not turn out right. I have a great recipe for waffles too if you want it. Hope this helps.
What is the safe way to clean it?
Wash in the sink with a toothbrush and normal dish detergent. Don't place in the dishwasher because the food particles will get into the machine. Difficult spots, clean with white vinegar only.
