If you can SEE the drive on your desktop but cannot modify it's contents there is a good chance it is formatted as NTFS which is a Microsoft Windows format. Mac's can only read/copy information from these drives and not write/delete/modify them. You have 2 choices, you can erase the drive and reformat it as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) (Mac/Linux only) or you can format it as MS-DOS (FAT32) which is truly cross platform but slower to read and write to from a Mac. To reformat the drive you use Apple's "Disk Utility" program in your utility folder.

All is not lost! (although that drive is most likely a goner...)
Modern hard drives take a beating better than their older counterparts, though they remain semi-fragile devices that rely on super precise internal balancing and magnetics. You're right that it's most in jeopardy when writing, but the sound you're describing indicates that it's read/write heads can't align themselves correctly.
The bad news is there's no way for you to remedy this without a state of the art clean lab and the precision tools to re-manufacture, or simply realign as the case may be, this hard drive.
The good news is most hard drive manufacturers offer a data recovery service for their hardware, so you can send your drive in and get back a fixed one complete with your old data. Even if you're out of service I'd call regardless as most are happy to sell you into recovery work.
If you find that it's a dead end, don't despair. Do an internet search for 'data recovery hard drives' in your local area and you may be pleasantly surprised. Many Data-smith companies exist these days for the sole purpose of recovering data that was lost to a drive crash.
Best of luck!
William
