How do you set upm

Open UPM DT420 manual on following link:
http://waterheatertimer.org/UPM-timers-and-manuals.html#DT420

The manual is longer than allowed for free answer and has important illustrations and options.
Please read the manual in addition to instructions given below.

Copied directly from the manual:
1) Select AUTO using the slide switch
2) Select the desired On-period (2, 4, 6, 8, 10 hours) using the dial switch
3) For continuous Dusk to Dawn operation, Select CONTINUOUS using the dial switch.
Timer turns ON automatically at dusk and turns off according to how you set 1 2 and 3.
If timer does not operate, or if it turns on at odd times, then it is broken.

Note: UPM manuals normally leave out important information, but this particular instruction matches closely with similar products and is probably accurate.

I am having a problem

You posted under UPM 350 programmable timer
http://waterheatertimer.org/UPM-timers-and-manuals.html

Manuals for all UPM timers are missing key explanations, despite the lengthy manual.
I think there are 3 things to look for:
1) Program1 is ON and program2 is OFF and program3 is ON etc.
2) When setting days, be sure that ON and OFF are set for same days so there are no conflicting programs.
3) Timer gives three modes: Countdown and Random and Programming. Countdown is for a bath fan when you want to turn on fan with push of button and have timer turn off fan automatically after the countdown expires. Do not use countdown or random functions when you want timer to perform ordinary on-off functions.

What is the purpose of

You posted under UPM programmable timers
Open following link to identify product and download manual

Q1) Some UPM timers, and other brands, offer countdown feature in addition to regular programming.
So you choose between regular programming and countdown.
Countdown is for a bathroom fan for example.
Push the button and fan turns on for set amount of time.
After countdown is over, fan turns off automatically.

Q2) Yes all days of the week can be selected.
Set event 1 ON for all days.
Set event 1 OFF for all days.
Do not set more events unless you want more on-off events.

Q3) Switch position depends on model number.
Add a comment with model number to identify product and I will look at manual alongside you.
Or try the switch in different positions.

I have the ET420C that

ET420C manual is longer than space allowed for free answer.
Moreover, this manual leaves off key steps and is totally unclear, just as you discovered.
http://waterheatertimer.org/pdf/ET420C-Manual.pdf
On-line manual has page numbers, but pages are not in order, so look carefully at page numbers.
http://waterheatertimer.org/UPM-timers-and-manuals.html#ET420C

1) Let me work alongside you while we look go through manual.

2) This timer is simple electronic clock, like alarm clock.
Look at page 3 of manual about setting the clock. (Remember to look carefully at page numbers)
Clock needs to know what time it is at your house right now.
Manual shows 10 steps for setting current time.
You use arrow keys to set clock.

3) Next look at page 4 "program settings"
Use arrow keys to select program number
Program number 1 thru 20 appear on display

In my opinion, it appears that program1 is ON, and program2 is OFF
So program1 will be when you want chlorinator to turn ON
Program2 will be when you want clorinator to turn OFF
The manual is missing this key detail, so look at display to see if it shows program1 ON and program1 OFF ... if the ON and OFF do not display, then timer sets as described above.
Make sure you set same days for ON and OFF times >> if programs have conflicts, then timer will not operate as expected.

How to set programs:
Use arrow keys to select program1 and then press SET
Use arrow keys to select day, and then SET, and then arrow keys to select hour, and then SET, and then arrow keys to select minutes, and then SET.
Repeat steps for program2.

4) Mode appears on page 7 of manual
Again the manual is totally unclear how to set MODE or what buttons are pushed
I have the opinion that you do not set MODE unless you use Countdown or Random feature.
So see if timer operates without setting MODE

5) Add a comment if you get stuck, and I will review manual with you while you push the buttons.
You can add as many comments as needed, and I will respond as needed.

6) For heavy-duty outdoor timer with fewer functions, that is easier to program:
Up to 1/4 Hp, 1000Watts

The second instruction for your 12 hour mechanical

Fixya does not make timers. We answer questions, for free, and for a price.
UPM makes UMP timers.
GE makes GE timers, etc.

1) My guess is that you move switch to angle line.
This is because other timers have similar instructions, except say move to angle line.

2) In either case, you have 2 options.
Try 1 option, and if that doesn't work, then try other option.
If neither option works, then timer is probably defective.
Most timers have 1 year limited warranty.

Installed several GE smart digital

15086 timer:
Pressing door will override timer setting and manually turn switch ON-OFF.
Press door or open timer door, and press any of 4 buttons located in corners.
You know information posted so far:

However, you are moving the small switch from Timer to OFF.
And when switch is OFF, the override does not work because circuit is OFF.
You want a timer that can switch programming OFF, and not switch circuit OFF, so that device toggles between timer and ordinary switch.

Looking at timers on the market today, I cannot think of any in-wall programmable or box timer that does what you want. Each has manual override that reverses timer function, but when you set timer to OFF, the circuit is OFF.
http://waterheatertimer.org/Programmable.html#Aube

Plug-in-type timers have override button that turns programming off, and then you can operate table lamp normally with the lamp switch. But in that case, the lamp has separate switch that operates outside of timer functions.

GE 15070 24-hour mechanical timer could do what you want:
http://waterheatertimer.org/images/GE-15070-mechanical-timer.jpg
In this specific case, when you wanted to operate timer like a light switch, you would move all the pins inward, and then use the on-off switch. The problem with this idea is the pins are tiny, and you need very good eyes or a light-source and small tool to continually adjust pins.

See GE timers and manuals:

We have a new ETW193

The ETW193 is only good up to 500 watts. Many space heaters are higher wattage than that. What is the wattage of yours? If it is 1000 w or 1500 w, you probably damaged the switch. If the other switch is mechanical, it may handle higher loads than the electronic switch.
