Sure, blame the kids. Could it have been a sporting event and your team lost? Just kidding, dump the screen and case. Sell the boards on ebay.

If the Standby light is blinking at the front panel of the TV, it seems that there is an internal malfunction occurred in the TV.
I will forward a link to a page where you can get more information and troubleshooting steps for this issue.

http://www.kb.sony.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?cmd=displayKC&docType=kc&externalId=C399467

Please perform the steps provided on the page. If the issue still persists then service of the TV is required.

It will be either BM board (Video Processor board) or Tcon Board (top side of panel). I have similar problem...my TV turns on, lamps turns on (you can see them from back side panel holes) but just a dark blue picture appears with no image (like picture when external input is selected without signal), no OSD appears....some times I can heard audio (using Antena).
I'm thinking getting the BM board.

The power trip off means that the main board has a short and so there is a high current drain which triggers the protect circuit to work and switch off.
So to trace it requires that the different driver sections be checked for possible high drain or heating. Check for dy points soldering.

Sony KDL40U2000... | Answered on Mar 16, 2019

This is what's happening: a part from your tv has failed; when you try to start the tv the failed part acts as a short and draws a lot of power, way more than it's supposed to do; when this happens the voltage on the power source drops - this triggers the autoprotection system of the power source which shuts it down - the standby led goes red; when the power source stops the power to its autoprotection system also stops, so it remains powered only by the charge in the filtering capacitors; when these capacitors naturally discharge the autoprotection system gets disabled , the power source restarts and the cycle begins again.
Since you get an active background lighting - the screen gets gray - it means that the power source, inverter and most likely T-con boards are ok. That leaves only the image or logic boards as the one s with the faulty part. The only way to know for sure is to open the tv and test them. This is a job for a pro, there's nothing more you can do to it.

Sony has the manual for the KDL-50R550A on the product support site: https://esupport.sony.com/US/p/model-home.pl?mdl=KDL50R550A&template_id=1®ion_id=1&tab=manuals#/manualsTab . Look in the left hand column under Manuals for the Operating Instructions; if you don't see that heading, click on the Manuals, Specs & Warranty tab. The current direct link to this manual is https://docs.sony.com/release//KDL-R520A_R550A.pdf . You should be able to print the file from Adobe Reader or a similar program.

    I hope this helps.
