My Shop-Vac 5870400 was working

Same thing just happened to mine. My solution is to get another one but a different brand. I think it should have lasted longer than four years of fairly light usage. From what I read, if it does as we both described, the motor is shot and not worth replacing.

When using a bag inside shop vac, do I still need

Keep it on. The purpose is to give you something to clean, a time or two, rather than have to replace the more expensive filter. I know it seems redundant, but all of the pieces filter better than just a bag. Also, if the bag gets any damp or wet material, it breaks and your next filters are the foam and paper filter.

Do I take off the dry bag and the fome cover when

dont know what model you have, but, as a rule, the dry bag is for dry vacuuming and the foam is for wet vacuuming.

I just bought a shop

Too much water in the unit causes what you describe. Water should be drained and the unit completely dried between water events, or unit will rust and have shortened life.

Do you need a special filter for wet application

Yes. The following site shows the filters and which is used for what. Due to potential motor damage, I wouldn't use it without the proper filter.

How can i replace or unclogg the hose ?model qsp

Remove the hose and lay it straight. Then using a broom or mop handle, push it into the hose and collapse the hose on the handle as far as you can. (Think crinkling your socks to pull them over your feet). You'll be doing much the same as you pull the hose up onto the handle. If you have no resistance from one end, then do the same things from the other end. Then replace the hose onto the vac and turn on the power. Your pushing with the broom/mop handle should dislodge whatever is caught and the suction from the vac should pull it through the rest of the way. I hope this helps. If so, please rate my solution. Good luck!

Where to by replacement motor

you can buy a replacement vacuum for the same price as the motor on its own. I would recommend getting a new unit altogether as they are not very expensive to but but a fortune to fix. I have been in the vac business for 20 years and have a bit of knowledge on shop vacs and a new one is your best bet.....good luck

We have a series 90S,

Remove the foam sleeve when using the unit to pick up water. The float is in there to indicate when the unit has "enough" water in it. The float rises with the amount of water and when the water reaches a certain height the float is "pulled" up into the air exhaust hole causing a change in the sound of the unit. This is the audio indicator that it is time to empty the water. If the foam gets wet with water, it closes off the air almost like the float does and the suction of the unit is reduced.

My basement is flooding and

You should remove the filter that is inside the vac. This should allow for the vac to **** up the water. But just in case that doesn't do it, here is a link to a site that may contain a free download of your manual:
www.shopvac.com/parts_pdfs.asp?p=%25&Submit=Search

Just look up your type of vac and click on it.

Good Luck!

My shop vac stopped working

Staring from the failrue of the power cord, the main plug,t he main switch each of the sections must be tested for continutiy before we can conclude.
SInce it is clear case of power failure the voltage must reach the motor,if not back trace to the point decribed above.
If voltage is at the motor without any reponse then the motor can be faulty.Checked also faulty surge/capacitors.

Shop Vac just stopped

If you remove the motor, you will see that the wires that go from the switch to the brushes. On one side there is one wire connected directly to the brush. On the other side the wire goes to a plastic plug with a second wire going to the brush. This is probably where the problem is. This is a fusible link and it has most likely melted creating an open in the circuit. I put a piece of solder where the link was and the motor ran BUT the brushed arced like a sparkler. Upon further examination the brushes were crumbling apart. I have been unable to find replacement brushes.
This machine has a five year warranty. I called Shop Vac Customer Service 1-888-822-4644 and they sent me a new motor.
I had a Shop Vac QL50EIC which had exactly the same problem but the warranty was expired so that I had to buy another motor for about $50.

When dry vacuuming, my shop

Sounds like you need to re-install the air filter so there is a tight seal between it and the vacuum. You may have removed it to do the wet vacuuming and then did not re-install it properly to do the dry vacuuming.
