Hi, you might be able to get back the operating software by using a software repository (ie softonic or softpedia) or the Sandisk website to upload the installation material onto your music player. Then after the player is functioning properly again, you can download your past music to the player from your computer. Thank you.

Add to this the fact that higher frequency consonants such as 'T' and 'S' sounds may range 8000 Hz to 10000 Hz which shortens the wavelength, it is very possible that some reflected sounds are cancelling the higher range, causing muddy sound. Try experimenting by moving book away or re-positioning the PVR.
