If you're in Windows you can go into your Administrative Tools > Computer Management and select Storage > Disk Management. You can work with any drive attached to your computer from there. Just right click on the drive and choose "Change drive letter and paths".

Why does my computer not recognise my usb stick ?
For every USB device the computer needs at least a driver. To access the device sometimes also an extra program. Windows 7 and up, will look for a driver on the Microsoft website, if an unidentified device is plugged in. Older OS'n, need a driver that came with the device on a CD.
If it worked before, just insert the Windows disk, to reinstall and then the OS will discover there is already a windows version active. Choose repair the os. The programs and drivers with even the smallest error will be replaced with new versions.

How to format 4 gb memory card?
Try to format in your "Device" and if that fails go to PC. First make sure your card reader device supports SDHC. There are some old readers languishing in the back of drawers that should be tossed.
Given that your reader is capable of reading an SDHC card set the windows format for quick and set at FAT-32. If this fails just toss it.
Flash cards are born to die. There is a limited number of times it will perform a write. Long term storage is a bad idea. Never try a low level format, it won't work and will destroy the manufacturers low level formatting.
I had one last a whole 12 hours fresh out of the package. I had another that worked diligently in a cell phone for a year and a half. Moral being, they are all going to fail sooner or later. Best to be prepared. There is a reason Android phones can upload your fresh photo and video to a cloud storage drive. Once it has reached that limit depending on what area died it may say write protected or it may simply just be a dead chicklet of plastic. Either way that is the last Rodeo, it will never play the piano again.
A 4GB card these days cost of replacement Is barely comparable to the cost of the time to just walk it over to the trash can.
If you are lucky you may be able to copy any data off of it to your HDD for a while. So don't waste your last possible salvage. Copy everything off to a folder on the HDD before it losses an area needed to read.

Why is my computer not recognizing my thumb drive?
I've seen this due to not having the correct drivers on your computer that support the connected flash drive. Visit the flash drive manufacturer website and look for support there. You may be able to download a driver. Be sure to know what you operating system is because that may matter to select the correct drivers.

FORMAT IN FAT
To format as FAT, put your drive into a USB port; right click on that drive after it appears in My Computer and select Format; set the File System drop-down to FAT (if available) and click Start. You may not have FAT available but you should find FAT32. That should be fine.
