There are troubleshooting steps for this problem that might help you. Recommend watching the following video, and conducting the troubleshooting steps in sequence exactly as shown:
That's because it's not a button. It's the ring around the shutter release button. There's a little grip at the front of the ring. Push it one way to zoom out, the other way to zoom in. See the illustration on page 13 of the manual.
Your question is impossible to answer without knowing how badly the camera is broken, and the only way to know that is by physical examination. However, the odds are that repair will cost more than replacement. You can take the camera in to a good camera shop and ask for an estimate but, once again, they'll probably tell you it would be cheaper to buy a new camera.
Mode is a behavior setting for the camera. The most common is "automatic" and this will rely on the camera to adjust settings like shudder speed and focus. But sometimes you need more control...
"Night" - will assume you need a very long shudder speed. while the camera will take pictures in lower amounts of light, you also have to work harder to keep the camera still. "Portrait" - This mode will adjust the automatic focus assuming that regardless of activity in the background that you want a picture of the object or individual directly in front of the camera "Video" - Takes low quality video instead of high quality still shots. "Landscape\Panoramic" - This setting is the opposite of portrait and assumes that the landscape is the main focus of the picture regardless of activity in front of the camera.
Other Modes: Cameras may have other modes that similarly allow for specialized photos. Some examples would be Black and white, color filters, light filtering, and overlays.
Look on Ebay for another one. Either use the new one for parts(unless it works fine) or use it as your main camera and keep the parts one for spares. This might be a good time to switch to 35mm.
The camera has a panoramic switch on it somwhere that caused a pair of baffles to close down over the film exposing only the center 1/2 of the film. The idea is that the print from this negative would be printed as a 4x11.5 inch photo. It's basically a 8x11.5 with the top and bottom of the print chopped off.
The only other alternative is that for some cameras had a panoramic adapter to place inside the film chamber, but that would be a very difficult thing to do inadvertantly.
I have the manual. I'll scan it for you & email it. My problem is that the manual doesn't identify the batteries & I lost the ones I'd removed for storage.
