I'm another one that bought
Have you tried synching the guitar to the ps2?
Have you tried replacing the batteries for new ones?
I know these sound basic but its easier to start with the simple things at first.
Let me know how it goes..

there must be a problem with the game, need 2 take it back.
My Washburn acoustic has a slightly twisted neck.
Replacing the neck is not cost-effective. The guitar sells new for around $225. If you get a new acoustic guitar, take great care to not allow the neck to twist. This is caused by improper truss rod adjustment or temperature and humidty conditions. Never take the guitar from a cold place to a warmer place and get the guitar out or expose it to damp conditions. A guitar should always have some slight relief in the neck but never too much.
Dropped Notes
After some tinkering, I was able to fix this problem myself. When I detached the neck, I noticed that the spring-loaded pins from the guitar body had pressed hard enough on the thin contact points that they created holes that went through to the circuit board, thus causing the intermittent signal loss problems. A carefully applied drop of solder on each of the contact points in the neck has my controller now working flawlessly once again.
Buttons on new guitar not working
Timed2go,
The issue you're experiencing is usually caused by damaged buttons or a damaged cord.
Either way, you need to take that guitar back to where you bought it and get them to exchange it.
Eventually, the entire unit will stop working.

Guitar buttons not working on right color
If you knocked it on the way from your friends house, then the circuits inside the guitar might be loose or been knocked into the wrong places. Either get it repaired down at a near Electronic Repair Shop: or get a new one.
No sound
check your connection cords and if thats not the problem, try going into options and adjust the sound levels
