Most water timers last a few years, and cannot be exposed to freezing temperatures and should not be exposed to direct hot summer sun. Check if the timer has reset button, then check if unit has battery. If unit is powered by 120V, then check you are getting at least 80% or 96Volts If functionality cannot be restored, then replace timer. Try to spray with a lube like wd 40. sounds like the mech is hung up with a foreign material. Spray-rinse-reinsert fresh batt.
