“quit working after a power surge.” Check voltage of speaker relay drive if there is +24V. If not, check +24V power supply. If OK,it must be either Main microprocessor unit, MPU or DSP problem.

HDMI connections are fickle. I have similar problems with them, and have to find the right position of the HDMI plug itself before it will pass the signal. I pull up on it lightly or remove it and plug it in again. The point being, these connectors are not very reliable, and have to be fiddled with to get them to work.

The Onkyo TX-8255 does not support any internet or Bluetooth access directly. You may be able to use the Onkyo remote interactive (RI) dock, DS-A5, to get the wireless streaming, if you can find one on E-bay or a similar resale site. See https://www.onkyousa.com/Products/model.php?m=DS-A5&class=Accessory . Onkyo has discontinued manufacturing these docks. The dock connects to the receiver via an audio cable. The features and manual for the Onkyo TX-8255 are available at the product page on Crutchfield, https://www.crutchfield.com/S-Q75dK8s0iLY/p_580TX8255/Onkyo-TX-8255.html . The current link to the manual is https://pdf.crutchfieldonline.com/ImageBank/v20080824133600/Manuals/580/580TX8255.PDF .

Unfortunately, if you can't find one of these docks, you'll need to connect use an audio cable between the TX-8255 and any dock for some gadgets or a direct connection for other internet connected devices. I wish that I had better news for you. Cindy Wells

"when first turned on, drops to tv, once reset, stays on cab/sat" Maybe the EEPROM
used to STORE user information goes wrong.
(1) voltage supplied to EEPROM +3.3V. at pin8
(2)C226 47uf 16v
(3)C225 10k nf
(4)R256-257 4.7K
(5)R260,R262 100ohms

if they are correct. If correct, buy a reader to read the data stored in EEPROM and burn it to a new EEPROM. To locate IC203 CPU then find IC204: EEPROM

search in taobao or google"Taobao USA/Hong kong/Tai Wan"then search"GZUT EZP_XPro V2 USB " will be cheaper <15USD. Maybe this can be used.

Must be DSP problem no matter what model it is. TX-SR/NR OR even RZ Series.

(1)If old model TX-SR/NR, you should replace the BGA DSP Q3001 "D830K013A/BZKB" TO "D830K013DZKB"IF DZKB get damaged, replace it with same DSP Chip-DZKB.
(2)For Tx-SR series, the DSP Q201 TMS320D788E001B SHOULD BE replaced with same model.
(3)For new model, RZ series the DSP Q3404 CS49844 should be replaced with same model.
(4)Crystal marked X201/3001/3404 should be replacd.

The loss of the display could be due to a poor connection but worst case would be total failure requiring replacement.

The TX 8555 can drive the speakers directly but if you want to use the equalizer then you need to add an amplifier to the system so that you can feed the pre-amp connections from the TX8555 through the equalizer and then into the amplifier to drive the speakers. This is because the TX 8555 doesn't have a loop back function for monitoring recordings.

I suggest you check the settings to make certain everything is correct, the way it was when you first set it up. OR you could try and reset the thing by setting it all up again. If you can find the factory reset on the unit, do that and then do all the settings again.
