This train set is very particular and getting it to work each Christmas is a family tradition in frustration. First you must make sure that all the pieces of track are connected properly and that the track is perfectly symmetrical and flat. We double-check the battery positions every year and find one in wrong. There are + and - signs, but they're hard to see; use a flashlight. There is a black toggle switch below and behind the red stack that toggles forward (to make the train go forward) and backwards (reverse); straight out perpendicular to the train is the "stop" position. Also, you have to start at a stop/switch station. One other note: behind the red stack, there is a smaller black stack. If you turn this, you can make smoke come out of the stack. I think I remember someone suggesting a drop of cooking oil. Hope this helps!!! Hope you get it set up for Christmas!!!

The track layout is simple enough, there are 12 straight peice of tracks and 12 curved tracks. So you can make it one big circle and not use the straight tracks or add 1-6 on each sidewith straight track and you'll have a long oval. Or have 1-4 on each side then add 1-4 after the third curved track of each circlular end to have a big type oval style.

Some lites lite up right when you push the power switch on and the remaining lights will work once the train is in motion.

Make sure you the wheels on the cars are actually rolling and not sliding (being drug down the track) Most of the animation is down mechanically as the set moves.

you say you have checked connections and are good
check the connections individually
remove one car at a time check to see if it works

go through the process of eliminating each rail car
narrow it down untill you find the faulty car
it might be a fault in just one car

hope this helps you

If you take the look at the price in the link
then you will realise why it does not worth to someone sell only the parts you need since you can buy the whole unit at this prices. So you should think to buy a whole unit and if you love the one you already have you can transfer all the parts you need and have also some spares.
