New batteries not holding charge
The problem is probably the AC adapter. If you have a voltmeter you can see what voltage is on the adapter output plug going to the base unit. Unplug the small plug from the base unit and measure. Since the batteries are 3.6 v, the power adapter plug needs to be something greater. Maybe 4.5 v. It should say on the AC adapter what it puts out (volts and max current). Usually the center is negative and the outside barrel of the plug is positive. Put the volt meter to 5v DC and put the black lead in the plug center and the red lead to the outside barrel of the small plug. If you measure a negative voltage, switch the leads. Make sure the Volt meter is not in current mode or you will be shorting the adapter at its output plug. If you get a reading larger the 4 volts then the problem is probably inside the base. There should be some circuitry to minimize charging current to the battery,.
