This could be the compressor start and run capacitor. They are not that expensive but not everyone sells them without sending out a technician and then the bill starts at about 200. IF you are not used to working with something like this, it is better to call a tech.

The most efficient way is to use the econo cool function. This will control humidity levels though only cooling to 85 degrees.

Not very practical unless you find a donor (identical) vehicle fitted with aircon and even then changing all the parts over would be a considerable amount of work even though a huge saving of cash.
